NITED STATES PATENT rrrcn.
JACOB WEITZ, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
REFRIGERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,363, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed April 2, 1885. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB W'EITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the ice-b0X of a refrigerator, whereby the ice is more easily taken to it and put in place, and the cold air in the removable ice-box is kept as much as possible from mingling with the surrounding warmer air, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter shown, described, and claimed by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, one of the doors being left off so as to show the interior ways upon which the removable ice-box is run in and out. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the center of the removable ice-box; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, showing also a detached side elevation of one of the ways upon which the icebox moves when being put into or taken out of the refrigerator.
In said drawings, a represents the refrigerator-boX.
a a are the doors leading into the refrigerator-chamber.
The door for the ice-chamber (0 into which the removable ice-box is put, is made and hinged to the box in the same way as the doors a a", and their construction is well known, so that a further description here of that portion is not required.
The ways a, upon which the icebox moves while being put in or taken out, are provided with friction-rollers a so as to permit the icebox to be easily moved into the refrigerator when full of ice.
The removable ice-box c is provided with a bail, c, for convenience in carrying it out and back for ice. The bail c isjointed to the sides by pins or rivets c and when turned down rests upon a small pin or projection, 0
The lower portion of the bail is provided with a downward extension, 0'', which moves provided with a removable plug, e attached to it by'a chain, 6*. This plug is put in when the ice-box is taken out and removed when the box is put back. The object of these devices is to prevent the cold air from flowing out or the warm air from rising up into the ice-box while bringing in theice, and the plug 6 prevents any dripping of water upon the floor while carrying it into the refrigerator.
This removable ice-box makes a convenient device to carry the ice in, and the construction of the refrigerator is such that the ice is not required to be lifted so high as in ordinary refrigerators while putting it in, and it is very easily put into place, as will be readily seen.
In Fig. 1, 6 represents the trough for receiving the drip from the ice-box, and f is the tube for conducting it oft, and f are two brackets for holding the top of the removable ice-box so that it slides easily between them and the rollers a I claim as my invention- 1. A refrigerator consisting of the box a, provided with the ways a having friction-rollers a and brackets f, in combination with a removable ice-boX provided with a plug secured thereto, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a refrigerator, a removable ice-box provided with a bail having a downward extension, in combination with a perforated slideway for automatically opening and closiug the holes in the sides of the ice-box, for the purposes described.
