Description

W. C. CRAFT.
REPAIR PATCH. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. r23, l9l5.
y amasar aan@ aras( f WILLIAM CRAFT, F ST. PA'UII, MINNESOTA.
REPAIR-PATCH;
specincation of nettersratent.
Patented sept.- 3, 1918.
Application led September 23, 1915. Serial No. 52,265.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. CRAFT, a
citizen of the United States, residin at St.
Paul, in the county of Ramsey and tate of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Repair-Patches, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to an improved repair patch for vehicle covers and curtains,
the primary obj ect being to provide a strongand durable patch, which can be quickly attached, and which will hold securely and of construction and combination of permanently when attached to the material constituting the covers or curtains of ve' hicles.
A further object is to which can be easily applied without the use of ,tools and which will hold without creeping, loosening or leaking.
A still further object is to provide a patch which can be easily used when cold, and without the application of heat. To these ends my invention comprises the features parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing is a section of a detail of my improved'repair patch.
Automobile tops comprising thecover and side curtains are usually covered with water proofed fabric, such as whaty is commonly.
called mohair or pantesote. This material is usually made out of canvas, cotton or linen fabrics or other materials constituting a backing and said backing is usually coated on the outside with a thin layer of water proof material made of rubber or suitabley composition. In repairing any holes or breaks in this material, it is laborious as well as expensive to sew patches over the broken portions, and my. inventlon obviates this objection by providing a patch which can` bequickly attached permanentlyover the broken portion of the coverin This patch which I have vinvente comprises a backing of material of a somewhat similar nature to that employed in the lcover and curtains of the top. l
In the drawing A indicates said bacln'ng which vis composed of textile material, such for instance as canvas 2 having an outer water proofed surface 3 of rubber or other composition intimately united therewith :provide apatch i from its-v adhesive surface.
material.
.under pressure or by pressure and heating in aI somewhat similar manner in which pantesote or mohair is produced. The under-surface of this backing is coated with a thin layer of rubber 4, which is secured to the surface of the backing by pressure or by f pressure and heating resulting in a unitary structure being provided having an outer water proofed surface and an inner adhesive surface, .which is to be secured over the broken part of the cover or curtain when' repairing the same. To protect the surface of the rubber 4c before application to the cover or curtain to be repaired, a thin fab# ric is pressed tightly over its surface, said fabric 5 being composed of any thin textile suitably waxed or treated to produce a protective medium and prevent air from coming into contact with the surface i of rubber until the patch is used. Y
lIn use the patch is made of the desired area and shape and the cover 5 stripped The adhesive side of the patch is then applied over the broken portion of the cover or curtain and ibut usually it is preferable toemploy cement.
Having describedmy inventlon what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters .Patent is:
` In combination .with the cover or cprtain ofa vehicle, arepair patch,.compris1ng a fabric body having one side waterproofed and the other side coated with adhesive rubber secured to the surface of said coveror curtain.. v
In testimony whereof, I have Signed name to -this specification.
