To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL LEI-IMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Police and Military Hats, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to furnish for others an improved hat, which is capable of resisting violentblows withoutbreaking, which is perfectly water-proof, and which can be readily cleaned by washing the exterior covering with soap and water.

The invention consists of a hat the body of a covering and inside lining cemented thereto by a suitable water-proof cement. The brim is re-enforced by a covering of suitable fabric below the exterior covering.

My improved hat is composed of three layers-an intermediate cork layer, A, an exterior covering of felt, cloth, or other fabric, D, and an inner covering or lining, E, of suitable fabric. In making my improved hats the intermediate layer or cork body, A, is formed of four or more sections of cork of uniform thickness, which are shaped on a formingblock by being nailed upon the same in moist The cork body is next dried on the shaping-block in a drying-chain her. The cork sections are then cemented together at the meeting edges and the brim covered with an exterior layer of thin muslin or other fabric, B, for the purpose of re-enforcing it to some extent. To the exterior surface of the cork body A is now applied a coating, B, of indiarubber cement, and over the same shrunk a covering, D, of felt, cloth, or other textile fabalso coated with a layer, (3, of india-rubber or other water-proof cement, and while the latter is yet in hot state the lining is put in and worked down upon the inner surface of the cork body A until it forms an intimate connection therewith. As the covering and lining re-enforce the cork body at both sides, a high degree of resiliency and strength is imparted to the hat, so that it is capable of resisting blows and of protecting the head of the wearer.

The hat is very durable, owing to its waterproof quality, and can be cleaned from time to time by washing the covering with soap and water. v

I am aware that cork hats are old and well known; but they have been made from flat pieces of cork, which are covered at the outer side and blocked into shape. This furnishes a light hat adapted for hot climates, but gives no strength and elasticity to the hat, and therefore no protection against blows. As the cork body of my hat is first blocked into shape, then waterproofed, and finally covered outside and inside, a hat of great resistance to blows and wear is obtained.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As a new article of manufacture, a military hat consisting of a body made of cork sections blocked into shape and united at the abutting edges by a suitable-cement, of an outer layer or covering, and of an inner layer or lining, said covering and lining being applied to the blocked cork body by means of water-proof cement, substantially as set forth.

2. The method herein described of making hats for military and other purposes, consisting first in blocking the cork sections that form the body of the hat, uniting the abutting edges by cement, coating the exterior and interior surfaces of the cork body bya water-proof cement, and finally applying the covering and lining thereto, substantially as set forth.
