Description

J. MASTENBBOOK.
LAMP CHiMNEY GUARD.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4, 1917.

anmemfoz JACOB MASTENBROOK, OF BIG RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
LAMP-CHIMNEY GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 20, 1918.
Application filed June 4, 1917. Serial No. 172,773.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB MAsrENBRooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Big Rapids, in the county of Mecosta, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description or the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in guards and particularly to guards for lamp chimneys.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which will effectively hold the chimney from falling from the holding fingers of the burner should the lamp be tilted.
Another object is to provide a simple and cheap device of this character which can be easily applied to the ordinary lamp burner.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
I11 the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a lamp showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an elevation looking in a direction at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken through one of the chimney holding fingers.
Fig. l is a top plan view.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents a burner which is carried by the lamp 11, said burner including the gallery 12 and the chimney fingers 18.
In the upper outturned end of two of the opposite fingers 18 there are formed the vertical openings 14:, and through these openings are disposed the upright wire members 15. These members are bowed outwardly to conform to the bulge of the sides of the chimney 16. To the upper ends of the wire members 15 there is secured a horizontally disposed ring or band 17 which engages around the neck of the chimney, as shown. This ring or band is formed in two sections each of which is semi-circular in shape and each is connected at one end to the upper end of one of the members 15. Thus the parts of the ring can be moved toward and away from each other to permit the ring to be properly engaged with the neck of the chimney. The portions of the members 15, below the apertured ends ofthe fingers, are engaged through the vertical openings 18 formed in the outwardly bowed portions 18 of the fingers 18, and then turned inwardly and upwardly beneath the gallery of the burner, at 20. The resiliency of the members 15 serves to retain them in position by the clamping action between the openings l l and 18', as well as by reason of the obtusely bent portions 19 of the said members above the openings in the upper ends of the fingers.
Thus when the chimney is disposed within the fingers of the burner and the device properly applied to the fingers and the chimney, the lamp may be tilted at any angle without danger of the chimney falling from the burner.
What is claimed is:
In a lamp chimney guard and holder, the
combination with the lamp holding fingers of the burner of the lamp, said fingers having their upper ends turned outwardly and their lower portions outwardly bowed, the said outwardly turned ends being formed with vertical openings, the said bowed portions being formed with vertically alined openings, of a guard including vertical stem portions having chimney embracing ring members on their upper ends, the lower ends of the stems being disposed through the openings in the fingers and extended beneath the burner.
In testimony whereof, I atfix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB MASTENBROOK.
Witnesses:
O. B. MARTELL, F. E. SMITH.
