Description

M. E. BRIDGES.
LAMP BURNER AND CHIMNEY.
APPLIOATION FILED MAY. 16, 1911.
Patented June 18, 1912.
m w v MOSCOW E. BRIDGES, OF SHUBU'IA, MISSISSIPPI.
LAMP BURNER AND CHIMNEY.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Moscow E. BRIDGES, citizen of the United States, residing at Shubuta, in the county of Clarke and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Burners and Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.
This. invention relates to burners for oil and similar lamps, and the primary aim of the invent-ion is to provide novel means for so firmly holding the chimney of the lamp upon the burner as to positively prevent its falling from the burner.
The invention further aims to provide a novel form of chimney so constructed as to be firmly held by the holding devices of the burner in such manner as to prevent its being tipped over or pulled olf of the burner without disengaging the holding devices therefrom.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which 2- Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the burner embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the threaded neck of the burner which neck threads into the usual opening in the top of the lamp font, and 2 the base of the burner, having a peripheral flange 3 which projects upwardly and outwardly and is cut away, preferably at diametrically opposite points, as at 4. The chimney of the lamp is indicated by the numeral 5, and is provided, at
its bottom, with a circumscribing flange 6 which fits within the flange 3 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The devices provided for holding the chimney on the burner are constructed to engage with the flange 6 and hold the same firmly in place within the flange 3, and each of these devices includes a strip 7 which is secured at its lower and inner end to the neck 1 of the burner and at its upper and I outer end to the under side of the flange 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

at the notch 4 therein. A pair of ears 8 is formed or provided upon each of the strips 7, and a chimney engaging finger 9 is also formed or provided with a pair of ears 10 through which and the ears 8 is passed a pin 11 serving to hinge the chimney engaging finger 9 upon the strip 7. A spring 12 is coiled about the pin 11 and at one end bears against the strip 7 and at its other end against the finger 9, and serves to hold the upper end of the finger in engagement with the flange 6 of the chimney 5, the said upper end of the finger projecting above the base 2 and being hooked, as at 13, to engage over the said flange 6. The engagement of the chimney engaging fingers with the flange of the chimney is such as to not only prevent the chimney being tipped over but also to prevent its being accidentally lifted from the burner. The portion of each chimney engaging finger projecting below the pin 11 serves as a finger piece and, the two fingers being oppositely located upon the burner, these finger pieces may be pressed toward each other by the thumb and finger of one hand while the chimney is removed by the other hand, such pressure exerted upon the finger pieces serving to swing the upper ends of the fingers out of engagement with the flange of the chimney.
It will be observed from'an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings that the strips 7 serve not only to support the chimney engaging fingers 9, but also serve as braces be tween the portions 1 and 2 of the burner and take the place of the ordinary braces which connect these parts.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a lamp, a burner having a neck, a base located above the neck, strips connecting the neck and base and bracing the same and supporting the base, spring-pressed chimneyengaging fingers mounted upon the said strips and having chimney engaging ends projecting above the said base, and a chimney having its lower end disposed upon the said base and provided with an outwardly projecting flange engaged by the said ends of the fingers.
2: In a lamp, a burner having a neck, a base located above the neck, strips connecting the neck and base and bracing the same and supporting said base, the said base being strips and having hooked upper ends engagformed wlth an upwardly and outwardly lng over the flange of the chnnney. 1o curved flange, a lamp chnnney having its In testlmony whereof, I aflix my s1g11ature .lower end disposed upon the said base and in presence of two Witnesses.
provided with an outwardly and upwardly MOSCOW E. BRIDGES. [11.8.] curved flange fitting within the flange of the Witnesses:
base of the burner, and spring-pressed chim- LEWIS W. SMITH,
ney'engaging flngersmounted upon the said PERCY W. JOHNSTON.
