Description

lCE.
ROBERT A. HAMILTON, 0F Y, N. Y
PIPE.
Specification of` Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1918.
Application filed August 3, 1917. Serial No. 184,217.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RoBEn'r A. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a smoking pipe.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eliicient structure of pipe which is economical to manufacture, and which is designed to prevent the mixture due to the saliva of the smoker from reaching the` tobacco being consumed.
Further objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location, and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown by the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out by the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing Figure l is a view in elevation and partly in section of a pipe structure embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the bowl portion of the same.
Figs. 3 and l are sectional views of modified structures of pipe bowls embodying my invention.
Fig. 5 is a view of the tube connecting the bowl and stem, detached from the pipe.
The Isame part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it appears throughout the several views.
Broadly my invention consists in preventing any mixture from the mouth of the smoker from reaching the tobacco, thereby at all times insuring a clean dry smoke and preventing the liquid mixture or nicotin from reaching the smoker. I accomplish this by providing an exterior passage from the pipe bowl to the stem, which passage is substantially U-shaped and inverted, thereby securing a longer travel of the smoke to the smoker, and at the same time bringing the smoke during its travel to the exterior of the pipe, thus tending to cool the smoke before it reaches the smoker.
Referring to Fig. 4 as illustrative of the principle of my invention the stem is indicated at l, which communicates by the pas sage 2 to the bowl 3 of the pipe. The pas! sage 2 is closed to the bowl B of the pipe. A passage 4, however, is bored to the passage 2 through the pipe of suiicient size to allow one end of a substantially U-shaped tube t to be snugly received therein, and the other end of the tube extends over the edge of the bowl 3 down into and at the bottom thereof as clearly shown. Thus it will be seen thatJ all smoke will be drawn through the tube b around the exterior of the pipe bowl into the passage 2 and thus through the stem l to the smoker. `While it is evident that with this construction the necessity for cleaning the pipe is greatly reduced, if not entirely eliminated, any saliva that may collect in the passage 2 may be readily drained by removing the tube 5 out of the hole 4. At the same time if necessary the tube 5 may be readily cleaned in any desirable or suitable manner.
A special feature of my present invention is the fact that pipes already in use may be readily modified to incorporate therein the feature of my invention. For example, and referring to Fig. 1, all that is necessary to convert the pipe shown therein, which is a usual well known construction, is to plug up the passage 2 leading into the bowl 3 with any suitable material as indicated at 6, and bore a hole 4: to communicate with the passage 2 to receive the tube 5, and 'thereby establish communication between the passage 2 and the bottom of the bowl. Another simple arrangement is shown in Fig. 3 wherein the bottom of the bowl where the passage 2 communicates with the bowl 3 may be filled with any suitable substance such as a cement mixture indicated at 7 thereby forming a new bottom for the bowl. In this instance, as in the structure shown in Fig. l, the hole 4 is bored to receive the end of the tube 5 as will be readily understood.
While I have shown and described my invention as applied to various forms of pipes it will be readily understood that it can be employed in any form of pipe, either straight stem as indicated vin Fig. 4, or curved stem. as indicated in Fig. l; likewise many modifications and changes will readily occur to those Vskilled in the art without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention as defined in the claim, therefore, what I claim as new and useful, and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a pipe the combination with a stein and n bowl, a. substantially U-shaped tube in.- verted over the edge of said bowl with one end thereof inserted in the passage in the stem und the other end thereof projecting my hand on this 18th day of July, A. D. 1917.
