To au whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES V. LIsY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenna, in thel county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska, have invented new and luseful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a clamp which is primarily intended to be employed Vto connect the trace with the haines strap, although the construction of the clamp is such that it may be advantageously employed to connect other straps comprising a part of a harness if found desirable.

The primary object of the invention is.

to provide a clamp of this character which when used in connection with the buckle now employed to connect the trace and hame tug strap will not only take the strain off' of the buckle, but will prevent the trace being worn at this point while the harness is in use.

A further object of the invention is to so construct the clamp that the greater the strain upon the trace the more firmly the trace will be held in engagement with the haines strap by the clamp.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a clamp which may be easily applied to a harness without'necessitating the service of a saddler for this purpose.

With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a portion of a harness wherein the trace is connected with the haines tug strap by clamps constructed in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through one of the clamps shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a top plan View of Fig. 1 wherein the movable jaws of the clamps are shown in position to permit the adjustment of the trace with relation to the hames tug strap.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fixed jaw of the clamp and v Fig. 5 is a similar view of the movabl jaw of the clamp.

Referring now to the drawing in detail the letter A designates, a portion of a harness wherein a trace 10 is connected with a haines tug strap 11 by a pair of Vvclamps l2 struck in accordance with the invention and adapted to prevent'undue strain being imposed upona buckle 13 while the harness is in use. n A Y Each of the clamps 12y comprises a4 fixed jaw 141 which is in the form of an eye plate and has its web portion passed between and secured to the strips from which the tugv i strap 11 is formed. By mounting the fixed jaw of the clamp on the tug strap in the manner described above the flanges at opposite side of the web portion of the fixed jaw through their engagement with the side of the strip from which the tug strap are formed prevent undue strain being imposed upon the rivets 12 employed to connect the fixed jaw with the tug strap.

The movable jaw of the clamp comprises a plate 15 which is flanged as shown to prpvide the movable jaw'with a longitudinally extending channel through which the trace 10 is passed. Extending transversely of the outer face of the plate 15 is a shaft 16 which is suitably secured to the plate and has its end passed through openings in links 17. The links 17 are pivotally connected with the flanges at the sides of the fixed jaw of erted upon the trace 10 the movable jaw of the clamp will be moved in the direction of the pull and will force the trace firmly against the hames tug strap 11.

With reference to Fig. 2 in the drawing it will be apparent that the greater the strain imposed on the trace 10 the harder the trace will be forced against the tug strap 11 to prevent undue strain being imposed on the buckle 13 or the movement of the straps l0 and 11 with relation to each other.

vWhen it is desired to adjust the trace l0 with relation to the haines tug strap the trace is disengaged from the stud on the buckle 13 and the movable jaw of the clamp l2 swung away from the fixed jaw of the clamp so that, by disengaging the trace l0 from the stud on the movable jaw of the clamp the trace may be drawn through the channel in the movable jaw of the clamp to the desired extent.

After the trace l0 has been vadjusted and the movable jaw of the clamp swung to clamping position the trace may be engaged with the stud on the buckle 13. o

From the `foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is apparent that a clamp has been provided for connecting a trace with the haines tug strap which is so constructed that an undue strain will be prevented from being imposed on the buckle employed in connection with these members and the adjustment of the trace with relation to the haines tug strap may be readily accomplished if the occasion requires.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination with a tug strap comprising two strips and a trace strap, of a clamp for said straps comprising an eye plate and a channeled plate, said eye plate receiving the strips of the tug strap on the webs thereof, means passing through said strips and said web for securing the tug strap to the eye plate, the trace strap received in the channeled plate, a vlug in said channeled plate passing through said trace strap, trunnions arranged centrally oi the eye plate7 a shaft arranged centrally and on the under face oit the channeled plate, and links connecting said shaft and trunnions.
