a draft rigging having an articulated yoke combined with an improved design of stop casting so arranged as to permit the draw bar and yoke to swing about an axis substantially opposite the centers of the stop castings. V
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a portion of a car, taken just above the gear and illustrating my improvement in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved yoke employed with my invention. And Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the yoke taken substantially on the line 3-3 thereof.
In said drawing, 1010 denote channel shaped center sills to the inner faces of which are applied my improved stop castings AA. Each of the latter is designed for a tandem gear and is provided with main stops 11, 12, 13 and 14: for cooperation with the front main follower 15, front intermediate follower 16, rear intermediate follower 17, and rear main follower 18, respectively. Intermediate the sets of followers are interposed the springs 19 and 20 in the usual manner. Each of said stop castings A is also provided with a series of limiting stops 21 for limiting the compression of the springs in the usual manner.
The draw bar 22 is operatively connected' with the tandem gear by the improved yoke designated generally by the reference B. Said yoke B, as shown, comprises two sections or parts B and B The section B is of substantially U shape and has upper and lower arms 24 and 25 connected by the arm 28, lower arm 29,-rear'vertical wall 30 i and front vertical wall 31, thus forming a rectangular pocket to receive the rear element of the tandem gear. The two parts B and B are pivotally or articulately connected by means of a series of spaced, overlapping, perforated ears orplugs 32 and 33 formed respectively on the rear of the mem- 'ber B and front of the member B a heavy pivot pin or bolt 34 extending through said cars 32 and 33. The bolt is heldvin position by any suitable means such as the cotter35. It will be noted from an inspection of Fig'. 3. that the pivot pin 34 is placed in quadruple shear, thus providing great strength in the connection.
In order to insure the draw bar swinging about an axis substantially at the centers of the castings each of the castings A is pro vided with an upper follower guiding and strengthening flange 36. Each of said flanges 36 between the middle post and rear stop has its edge 37 extended parallel to the center line of the gear, thus maintaining the rear part B of the yoke always substantially parallel to the axis of the gear. in both bufi ing and pulling movements. Forwardly ofv the center posts of the castings, the flanges 36 are cut away or tapered or inclined outwardly as indicatedat 38, it being understood that the center posts of the castings are deeper than the front stops. By this arrangement, it is obvious that the draw bar and yoke may swing radially as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, about, the center posts of the stop casting as fulcrums, while a direct straight line pull or buff is always maintained on the followers of the rear element of the tandem gear, thus minimizing the tendency of the parts to bind. The yoke and elements of the gear are, supported by any suitable means such as the saddle plates 39 which are detachably gear, the front portion of the articulated yoke being adapted to have radial movement.
2. As an article of manufacture, a stop casting for draft riggings, said casting being provided with front,crear, and intermediate main stops for cooperation with followers of a tandem gear, said casting having an upper flange tapered from the center stop to the front main stop and of substantially uniform width from the center stop to the rear stop.
3. In a draft rigging, the combination with tandem stop castings, each having an upper guide flange tapered from the middle thereof toward the front end of the casting and of substantially uniform width from the center of the casting to the rear thereof, of an articulated yoke, the rear portion of said yoke being confined to substantially straight line movements parallel to the axis of the gear by the rear portions of said flanges, the
front portion of the yoke being permitted a radial movement.
4. In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills and stop castings secured to the inner faces thereof, each of said stop castings having an upper flange tapered from the center thereof toward the front end of the casting, said flanges from the center of the casting extending-substantially parallel to the center line of the draft rigging, of a two-part yoke, said parts being pivotally connected opposite the centers of said castings, whereby the front portion of the yoke may swing radially about the center of the castings as fulcrums.
