To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, l/VAL'rnr. H. Mosrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowville, in the county of Lewis, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musiclurners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention is directed to improvements in music leaf turners, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and one which can be easily operated to turn a music leaf without the necessity of the player removing the hands from the keys.

A further object of the invention is to provide a music leaf turner which can be easily and quickly attached to the conventional form of piano or organ, and when in place thereon can be actuated by the knees of the player to turn the music leaf or leaves.

WVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a piano showing the device in place thereon.

Referring to the drawing 1 designates a sheet metal casing, which is secured in any suitable manner beneath the key board of the piano, said casing having its outer wall provided with spaced pairs of struck-out tongues 2 and 3 for slidably connecting the of the operating plan view of the oper- Specification of Letters Patent.

bars 4- and 5, said bars being provided with stops 6 and 7, respectively, the purpose of which will appear later. Resilient fingers 8 and 9 are carried by the respective bars 4 and 5, said fingers having heads 10 and 11 respectively, which are adapted to project through the slots 12 and 13 of the bars for slidably engaging the oppositely directed inwardly turned angular tongues 14 and 15, respectively, which are struck from the front wall of the casing 1.

Fixed to the front of the piano is a vertically disposed casing 16 which has its front wall provided with a longitudinal slot 17 in which is engaged the arm 18 of the vertical post 19, said arm having connected thereto a bowed leaf spring 20 which en gages the inner surface of the frontwall of the casing 16 and is of sufficient strength to hold the post 19 in different adjusted positions. Rotatably engaged with posts 19 are the rings 21 of the leaf turning arms 22, the lowermost ring of each arm being limited in its downward movement by the offset 23 which is carried b T the sheet metal bracket 24, said bracket having an opening 25 formed therein for engaging the arm 18. These arms 22 are provided on their outer end with page engaging clips 22, and near their attaching or inner ends with integral projections 23 to which are attached the wires 35. The arm 18 is soldered to the bracket 24 to prevent rotation thereof with respect to said bracket. The bracket 24 is provided with an arm 27 which carries a clamping sleeve 28 in which is engaged one end of the flexible coil 29, the other end of said coil being connected to the curve tube 30, said tube having its lower end fixed to the front wall of the casing 1.

The bars 4 and 5 have one of their ends provided with blocks 31 and 32, respectively, said blocks having bores 33 formed therein and are further provided with set screws 34 which are adapted to engage the adjacent ends of the wires 35, there being two of these wires, which are slidably engaged in the tube 30 and coil 29 and have their upper ends connected to the leaf turning arms 22 whereby when the bars 4: and 5 are slid the arms will be swung in the desired direction.

Having its upper end pivoted to the piano is a lever 36, said lever being so arranged as to swing longitudinally of the casing 1. In the operation of the music leaf turner, the

lever 36 when at the left hand side thereof engages between the stop 7 and the head 11 of the finger 9 which has been flexed outwardly by engaging the flat face of the casing 1 so that on moving said lever 36 to the right hand side the bar 5 will be shifted to the right until the finger 9 flexes inwardly by reason of the head 11 riding on the tongue 14;, whereupon the lever 36 is freed from the bar 5 and on further movement thereof contacts with the stop 6 on the bar 4 so that continued movement of the lever 36 to the right will shift the bar a in the same direction and during this movement of said bar 4; the finger S is flexed outwardly by the head 10 riding upon the tongue 15 on the outer flat face of the casing 1 thereby locking the lever 36 with the bar 4. These bars in their successive movements to the right actuate selectively the wires 35 so as to turn the arms 22 singly from the right hand side of the music leaf turner to the left hand side in successive order. Should it be desired to turn the leaves of music from the left to right after the shifting of the same to the left hand side of the music leaf turner, the lever 36 is shifted from right to left and in its movement first shifts the bar 4 from right to left and thereafter the bar 5 is shifted from right to left, the lever 36 being re leased from the bars when the fingers have their heads 10 and 11 ride on to the tongues 14 and 15 which are located at a neutral point between the limits of movement of the bars as will be apparent.

What is claimed is 1. A music leaf turner comprising a cas ing, a pair of bars slidably supported on the casing, inwardly bent tongues out from Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the said casing and reversely disposed with respect to each other, resilient fingers carried by the bars and having heads engageable with the tongues for the automatic shifting of said fingers outwardly and inwardly on the movement of the bars, stops on the bars adjacent the fingers, a lever engageable successively with the stops and automatically locked with the bars by the fingers on progressive movement of said lever, and music leaf turning arms pivotally supported and having connection with the bars for the swinging of said arms on movement of the bars.

2. A music leaf turner comprising a casing, a pair of bars slidably supported on the casing inwardly bent tongues cut from said casing and reversely disposed with respect to each other, resilient fingers carried by the bars and having heads engageable with the tongues for the automatic shifting of said fingers outwardly and inwardly on the movement of the bars, stops on the bars adjacent the fingers, a lever engageable successively with the stops and automatically locked with the bars by the fingers on progressive movement of said lever, music leaf turning arms supported relative to the easing and pivoted for swinging movement, and wires connected with the bars and with the arms respectively for swinging the latter on movement of said bars.
