Application filed September 4, 1917. Serial Ito. 189,614.
'1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Belt known that I, PERRY D. ZEIGLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Cattaragus and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Hand-Covering, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a hand covering equipped with two thumbs, the construction being such that the covering can be reversed and shifted from one hand to the other, thereby permitting the back of the hand covering to be used as the palm, when the palm becomes WOI'IL,
The invention aims to provide novel means for holdingin a folded condition, the thumb which is not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide, as an article of manufacture, a thumb for a hand covering, having means for holding the thumb folded, said means constituting a part of the thumb, so that the thumb can be sold as an article of manufacture, to makers of gloves.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the comblnation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figures 1 and 2 are elevations showing opposite sides of a hand-covering embodying the invention;
Fig. 8 is an elevation wherein the structure is viewed edge-wise;
Fig. 4: is a perspective showing a modification.
ln carrying out the present invention there is provided a hand covering which may be of any desired form, so far as receiving the fingers of the wearer is concerned. lln the present instance, the hand covering includes body members 1 and 2, connected along their edges as shown at 17. Assem- Specification of Letters Pat ent. 7
a aem a July 2, this.
bled with the body member 1 is a thumb 3,
' a thumb 4: being mounted onthebody member 2, the thumbs 3 and f being opposltely disposed, and being arranged adjacent the same edge of the hand covering. The thumbs 3 and 4 may be supplied with reinforcing patches 5 if desired.
The numeral 6 indicates a transverse strip attached at one end, as shown at 7 to the thumb 3 and attached, as shown at 8, to the body member 1. The numeral 9 marks a stri attached as shown at 10 to the thumb 4 an attached as shown at 11 to the thumb d.
en the structure is worn, that thumb, for instance the thumb 3, which is not in use, is folded back and engaged beneath the appropriate strip, the strip 6 being referred to in the present instance.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 4. of the drawings, the thumb appears at 12 and the strip is shown at 14, the strip 14: being attached as at 15, at one end, permanently to the thumb 12. The other end of the strip is attached by means of a separable fastener 16 to the thumb 12. In this form of the invention, the strip and'the thumb 12 may complete the structure which, as an article of manufacture, may be sold by makers of gloves.
Generally considered, the advantage of the device hereinbefore described is that it practically doubles the life of the hand cov ering.
It is obvious that the structure hereinbefore described can be used upon mittens, or upon gloves, provided with any desired number of finger receiving stalls.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 2- V l. A hand covering provided with a thumb a transverse strip beneath which the thumb may be inserted when folded; and means for attaching the ends of the strip to the hand covering, both longitudinal edges of the strip being free, whereby the thumb may extend entirely across the strip and project therebeyond, thus permitting the thumb to lie fiat irrespective of the length of the thumb and irrespective of the position of the strip with respect to the butt of the thumb and the tip thereof.
2. A hand covering comprising a body; a thumb; means for securing the thumb to the body; a strip beneath which the thumb is lllfl adapted to be inserted when folded; and means for securing the strip to the thumb independently of the body.
3. A hand covering comprising a body; a thumb; means for securing the thumb to the body; a strip beneath which the thumb is adapted to be inserted when the thumb'ris folded; means for securing one end ofthe strip to the thumb permanently and inde- 10 pendently of the body; and a separable fastening independent of the body and securing the other end of the strip to the thumb.
'In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
