- Specification of Letters Patent. Patentqgd J ly 2 149118;
Application filed November 28, 1913. Serial No. 803,490.
To all whom, it may concern.
Be it known that WQWNILLARD C. GREENE and Louis E. SHAW, citizens of the United States, residing at East Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements iirCigar and Cigarette Holders, of which the following is a, specification.
()ur invention relates to cigar and cigarette holders and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple form of holder of the butt ejecting type, which can be constructed at a cost justifying the free distribution of these articles with cigars,-
cigarettes or tobacco as a premium or an advertising medium.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved device of this character which will form an air-tight connection between the holder hereinafter, designated as the tobacco holder and the mouth piece which will permit of a ready cleaning of the parts; and which will insulate the heat of the burning tobacco from the mouth piece and from the fingers of the user.
Various other objects and advantages will be in part obvious and in part more fully set forth in the following description of one form of our invention, which consists broadly in a mouth piece of some suitable material having a reinforcing ring, the ring portion of which telescopes within atobacco holder formed of a spirally wound fabric treated with fireproofing and waterproofing compounds. The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of and claimed.
In the drawin s:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred form of our invention shown in extended position;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the device with the parts extended in operative position; and r Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in collapsed telescoped position.
In the drawings is shown a mouth piece 1, of any suitable material, preferably in the form of a hollow cylinder, the bit end of which is defined by a ring 2 usual with devices of this character. The opposite or inner end of the mouthpiece 1 is defined by a frusto-conical ring 3 with the wide end adjacent to the end of the mouth piece 1, and
parts hereinafter set forth Telescoping about the mouth piece ispa tobacco holder 4 which is formed of a single strip of fabric preferably distensible such as paper, spirally wound with each succeeding turn overlapping thereby forming a tu bular member of a general frusto-conical shape, the bore of which is spirally stepped from one end to the other and the larger end of which is reinforced by the ring To render this holder fireproof and waterproof it may be impregnated, covered or otherwise treated with a suitable compound such a solution of acid sodium silicate.
The' nouth piece 1 is preferably of a length greater than the length of the holder 4: so that, when the parts are in the. collapsed telescoped position shown in Fig. 3, ready access is obtained to the ends of the mouth piece for cleaning the same and at the same time the mouth piece is held associated to the holder by means of the rings 2 and"8.
As the holder 4; has slight flexibility it tends to conform to the configuration of the cigar or cigaretteplaced therein, thus providing an air tight joint between the holder and. the cigar or cigarette.
As this holder is preferably distensible, the drawing of the same into engagement with the ring 3 causes the adjacent parts thereof to lap partially about the ring thus insuring a tight fit therewith.
By making the holder of paper or similar fabric having poor heat conducting properties the holder and mouth piece are kept comparatively cool.
The spiral formation of theinner bore of the holder 4 permits the cigar or cigarette to be inserted into the holder with a screwing action thus further insurin a firm connect-ion between the cigar or Page rette and the holder.
A device of this kind can be readily constructed by wrapping a strip of fabric on a mandrel, verlapping the turns as the strip is fed lon itudmally, pasting or otherw se ice securing the coiled strip to prevent unwinding and treating the formed tube with waterproofi .g and fireproofing compounds.
Although We have shown only one form of device embodying our invention, it is obvious that various changes within the skill of the meohanic'inay be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, provided the'nieans set forth in the follow ing claims are employed.
Having thus claim v '1. Awaterproof a rially less than the length of the mouth piece, telescoping the ring end of said mouthpiece described our invention, we
d fireproof cigar and cigarette holder, comprlsing a cyllndrlcal mouthpiece having a and adapted to be moved into binding ongagement therewith and a rigid ring reinforcing the larger end of said holder.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a lnonthpiece havingaring adjacent one end thereof and aholderof slightly distensible material having a tapered bore containing the end of the mouthpiece having the ring, said flexible holder adapted to be moved into engagement with and partially lap about said ring.
This specification signed and witnessed "this 26th day of November, A. D. 1913.
