Description

0. CARTUDGE.
SAFETY RAZOR. APPLICATION FILED OCT- '5. H5. 1 ,270,783. Patented July 2, 1918.
NVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEY OSCAR CARTLIDGE, 0F GILLESPIE, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR CARTLIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gillespie, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in razors, and more particularly to safety razors.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a safety razor, having the appearance of a razor of the old type, having a folding blade.
The further object of the invention is the provision of a safety razor which may be easily cleaned and can be used with either the right or left hand, as desired.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a safety razor which may be stropped or honed in the same manner as the old form of razor without removing the safety guard.
A 'still further object of the invention is the provision of a razor having a guard which-may be easily attached or detached.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmental side view, show-- ing the blade open with the guard in position, ready for use,
Fig. 2 is a fragmental perspective view of the blade with the guard in position,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the blade with the guard in position,
Fig. 4 is a side view of the parts broken away, and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the clamp for securing the guard in position upon the blade. I
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a handle of ordinary construction and 2 a blade pivotally connected to the handle at 3. The blade is of ordinary construction with the exception that it is provided on the outer end with a lug or projection 4, said lug or projection 4 having a groove formed in the end thereof and also in the top. The purpose of these grooves will be presently described. I
The safety-guard comprises a wire rod guard with Specification of Letters Patent.

indicated at 5, provided on one end with a right-angled extension indicated at 6, said extension having a projection or extension formed thereon and adapted to extend parallel with the razor blade. The opposite end of the wire 5 is provided with a rightangled extension indicated at 8, said extension having a projection extending at right angles thereto, as indicated at 9, and parallel with the wire 5. The extension 8 is also provided on each side with a lug 10 adapted to engage the under side of the projection 4, formed on the end of the blade 2. The extension 8 is of greater height than the extension 6, the purpose of which will be presently described.
The clamp is used for securing the guard to the blade and is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. This clamp comprises a strip or plate 11 having a notch 12 formed in one end thereof and provided with L-shaped flanges or extensions extending upwardly therefrom, as indicated at 13.
Having fully described the detailed construction of the device, it is thought that the advantages and operation will be fully understood. It will be appreciated thatI have provided a safety razor having the appearance and advantages of the ordinary blade form of razor, and one which may be easily cleaned without removing the guard. When ready for use, the guard is in the position as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the wire 5 extending parallel with the edge of the blade. The projection 7 on the extension 6 engages beneath the shank formed on the blade 2, and is adapted to be engaged by holding it to the blade. The notch 12 formed in the plate 11 of the clamp will engage. the side of the extension 6, thereby controlling the lateral movement thereof and of the guard 5. The extension 8-extends in front of the end of the blade and is adapted to be received in the groove formed in the end of the projection 4, thereby controlling the lateral movement thereof and consequently of the guard 5. The projection 9 extends over the top of the lug 4 and is adapted to be received within the groove formed in lugs 10 formed on each side of the extension 8 will engage the underside of the proje'c tion 4 and prevent the wire guard from being forced upwardly. The guard may be the clamp for the top of the projection 4. The
' the lather may be removed from the blade by using a sheet of paper inthe ordinary manner.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. safety razor comprising a blade havinga projection formed on one end thereof,
sald projection provided with a groove in the end and top thereof, a guard adapted to be secured to the blade, said guard pro-v vided on one end With an L-shaped extension adapted to engage the under side of the blade, the opposite end of the guardprovided with an extension adapted to enter the groove in the projection, and a clamp carried by'the blade and adapted to engage the L-shaped extension on the guard, said clamp be secured to the blade,
provided with a notch adapted to receive the extension.
2. A safety razor comprising a blade having a projection formed on one end thereof, said projection provided with a groove in the end and top thereof, a guard adapted-to said guard provided on one end with an L-shaped extension adapted to engage the underside of the blade, the opposite end of the guard provided With an extension adapted to enter the grooove in the projection, and a springclamp carried by the blade and adapted to engage the L-shaped extensionon the guard, said clamp comprising a bottom plate having a notch to receive the extension, sides to engage the sides of the blade, and flanges on the sides to overlie the top of the blade.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
OSCAR CARTLIDGE.
