To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERTO FRITZ EMIL OKRAssA, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Antigua, Guatemala, Cen, tral America, have invented a new and Improved Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, this being a division of the application Serial No. 111,845, filed by me on July 28, 1916.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a new and improved boiler arranged without an ash pit within the boiler. Another object is t0 provide means for agitating any sediment between the lire box and the shell, to permit drawing off such sediment and thereby keep the boiler clean and to allow a free circulation of the water in the shell.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a tubular lire box arranged within the boiler shell and an open annular frame connecting the bottom of the fire box with the bottom of the shell, the latter and the fire box having openin gs in register with the opening in the said frame.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, vin which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the boiler on the line 1--1 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross section of the boiler at the cross channels and showing more particularly the agitating devices for stirring up the sediment to prevent clogging of the cross channels;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central section of the boiler at the longitudinal channels and showing more particularly the agitating devices therein;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional plan View of the operating mechanism for one of the agitating devices in the cross channels;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the operating mechanism for the agitating devices in the longitudinal channel;
Fig. 8 is a reduced plan view of the frames in the bottom of the shell; and
Fig. 9 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of the bottom of the fire box, the Shell and spacing frames between the fire box and shell, the section being on the line 9-9 of Fig. 3.
The boiler shell 10 is provided with the ends or heads 11 and 12 connected with each other by the usual return flues 13. Within the shell 10 is arranged a tubular fire box 14 having its bottom portion attached to open frames 15 attached to the bottom portion of the shell 10 so as to space the bottom of the lire box 14 from the bottom of the shell 10. The frames 15 are preferably rectangular in shape and are spaced apart to form transverse channels 1G to permit the circulation of the water between adjacent frames. As shown in the drawings, two frames are arranged transversely and spaced apart to form a longitudinal channel 16n between them, and two pairs of frames are located one behind the other, but for boilers of small size one set of frames may be used, and for larger boilers more than two sets of frames may be employed. The bottoms of the shell 10 and the fire box 14 are provided with openings 17 and 18 in register with openings 19 in the frames 15 to allow the sashes to drop through to the outside of the boiler' from the grate bars 20 mounted on grate bar frames 21 arranged within the fire box 14 in the usual manner. If the two sets of frames 15 are used, as shown in the drawings, then use is also made of a hollow reinforcing and grate supporting member 22 provided with flanges 23 fastened to the opposite members of the two sets of frames 15, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. In this case the opposite members of the grate bar frames 21 are supported on the fianges 23. The water feed pipe 24 is preferably connected with this reinforcing member 22 to supply the boiler with water, but the feed water supply pipe 24 may be connected with any one of the channels 1G if desired. A pipe 25 having a draw-off cock (not shown) leads from one of the channels 16 for carrying oli' any sediment that may collect in the bottom of the boiler.
In order to prevent the channels 1G and 16a from becoming clogged by sediment use is made of agitating devices more fully shown in Figs. 4, 5, G and 7.
The agitating devices for the cross channel 16 are in the form of two segmental wires or rods 90, extending into the channel 1G from opposite sides and reaching with their inner ends close to the longitudinal crank 91 held or formed on the inner end of a shaft 92 mounted to turn in a suitable stuiiing box 93 attached to the shell 10 of the boiler. provided with a hand wheel or handle 94 which is periodically actuated by the attendant to rotate the shaft 92 and `thus cause the eccentricv91 to impart movement to the corresponding wire or rod 91 for the latter to stir up any sediment that may have lodged in the channel 16. The stirred up sediment is readily drawn ofl on opening the valved pipe 25.
The agitating device Jfor the channel 16.a is in the form of a wire or rod 95 extending lengthwise in the said channel and passing through a stuffing box 96 arranged on the front head 11 of the boiler shell. rIhe outer end of the wire or rod 95 is pivotally connected with a lever 97 ulcrumed 'on a bracket 9S and under the control of the at` tendant. On imparting a to and fro swinging movement to the lever 97 a forward and backward sliding movement is givenv to the wire or rod 95 for the latter to stir up the sediment that may have lodged in the channel 16a. The stirred up sediment is drawn off by way of the pipe 25.
The boiler shown and described is very. simple and durable in construction and can be cheaply manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: v
