Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 12, 1917. Serial No.-148,160.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE PATZ NER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fountain City, in the county of Buffalo and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel-Hinge-Gate Openers and Closers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a gate and has for its principal object the production of a swivel hinge gate opener and closer.
Another object of this invention 1s the production of a gate wherein a bar and lever are secured and carried so that when in their normal positions, they will retain the gate in a closed position, although when moved toward a closed position, they will pull the gate to an open position.
Another object of this invention is the production of a gate opener and closer wherein a pivotally mounted rod is employed for supporting one end of the lever, thereby permitting the necessary swinging movement of the rear end of the lever as the gate is being moved to an open or closed position.
A still further object of this invention is the production of a gate opener and closer wherein a standard is provided with a frame formed therein, whereby the standard may support one end of the lever and also carry the cables so as to permit the cables to be extended to a desired position.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed: i

A hinge 20 is fixedly mount ed by means'of the screws 21 upon the oppositeend of the lever 15 and this hinge 20 is also secured by screws 21" to the inner end ofthe bar 22.. This bar 22 is also elongated and is much longer than the lever 15 as shown=clearly in Fig. 2 and has an elongated plate 23 riveted or secured by any other suitable securing means as shown at 24 at its outer end. This plate 23 has a ring 25 formed integral upon its outer end and it should beunderstood that this ring 25 will becarried at a distance beyond the outer end of the bar 22. A bracket 26 has its feet 27 secured by rivets-or bolts 28 to the gate 3 and this bracket 26' passes through the ring 2 5of the plate 23 for supporting the forwardend of the bar 22.
An eye 29 is carried by the inner end of the bar 22 as shown in Fig. 6 and to this eye 29 the inner endsfof the cables'30 are secured as indicated at 31. These cables 30 extend upwardly through the eyes 32 which are secured t0 the overhanging end S of the frame 6 as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive. These cables 30 then extend at substantially right angles tothe eyes 32 carried by the overhanging end 8 of the frame 6 so as to pass over the pulleys/33 carried by the bracket and bolt as indicated at3 1 to one end of the cross bar 35 mounted upon each post 36. These" cross bars 35 are braced as indicated at 37 so as to be held in their, correct'positions. The cables 30 then depend downwardly as shown at 38 so as to'ha-ve a grip loop. 39, It will be further seen that these cables 30 are at all times retained ina taut position by means of the weights a0.
When this gate opener and closer is in use, it Will normally-assume the position as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive. At this time, it will be seen that the bar and lever will-be extending in alinement with each other and as a consequence, it willbe impossible to open the gate by merely pushing'thereagainstowing to the dead center condition of the "bar and-leverJ When, how ever, it isdesir'ed to open the gate, this action may be easily accomplished, even from a vehicle if necessary, by the operator gripping the loop 39 and pulling downwardly thereon. By pulling one of the loops, it will be seen that one of the cables 30 will be drawn through one 'of the eyes 32 and over one of the pulleys 33, thereby pulling upwardly upon the eye 31 carried by the bar 22 While this action is taking place, it is obvious that the weight 40 upon the remaining cable will take up the slack in the cable and cause t-hecable to remain in a taut condition as above set forth. By the pulling upon one ofthe cables 30 and the lifting of the eye 29,, it will be seen that the inner end of the bar22 will be swung upwardly as will the forward end of the lever 15. This action is permitted because ofthe pivotal connection of the bar lever. While this action is taking place, "it will be seen that by drawing upwardly upon the inner end of the bar 22, the forward end of the bar will be drawn toward the standard 5 and as a consequence will pull uponthe bracket 26 and thus swing the gate toward anopen position. While this action is taking place, it
is obvious that the position of the pivot point withrespect to the standard and the bracket 26 will be changed and, therefore, the inverted L-shaped rod 13 willbe swung upon the bracket 9, thus allowing the inner end of the lever 15 to be swung to accommo date the action necessary for the movement of the lever at its forward end and the bar 7 at its inner end upwardly. Continued pulling upon the cable will, of course, bring the gate to an openpositionof various degrees. As'soon as the cable is released, it will be seen that the weight of the bar and lever I will cause the gate to be swung to a closed position andthe bar and lever to assume their normal positionsas shown iii Figs. 1

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a very efiicient gate opener and closer is provided wherein the bar and ,lever are pivotally supportediso as to'perinit action thereon due to fpulling upon either.
one of the two cables to move the gate to an open position or move the gate to a closed position when the cable is released, while the mounting of the inner end of the lever upon the pivotally mounted L-shaped rod will permit the nexzessary action of one end of the lever and bar as the gate is being moved to an open position or closed position.
It will be further seen that a very efficient and simple standard and frame have been provided which are formed as indicated to permit a bracket to be carried upon which the inverted L-shaped rod is supported while the frame is formed upon the standard so as to extend for a considerable distance thereabove for carrying eyes through which the operating cables extend. Furthermore by having this frame extending to one side of the standard, it will be seen that the upper end of the standard is unobstructed thereby allowing sufficient space for the free movement of the rod to the inner end of the lever.
It is obvious that after the gate has been started by the upward movement of the rear end of the bar and the forward end of the lever, the momentum acquired by the gate will cause the lever to move across the dead center when the gate is being moved to an open position. When the gate is being moved to a closed position, the momentum acquired by the gate in the opposite direction will also swing the lever across a dead center, after which the weight of the bar and lever in combination with the momentum of the gate will cause the gate to be entirely closed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a hingedly supported gate, a post, a bracket carried upon said post, said bracket having alined openings formed therein, a sectional bar pivotally connected to said gate, said bar having a sleeve carried upon its rear end and an inverted L-shaped rod having an inner end portion projecting throu h the openings of said bracket, where y said rod will be supported, said rod also projecting through said sleeve for pivotally and retainably supporting the rear end of said sectional bar, and means for moving said bar.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a hingedly supported gate, a standard, a frame formed integral upon said standard, said frame being off-set with respect to one side of said standard, said frame terminating in an overhanging portion, a bracket carried upon said frame, a rod pivotally supported upon said bracket, a sectional bar .pivotally secured to said gate and carried by said rod, pulleys connected to the overhanging portion of said frame, cables passing around said pulleys and connected to said bar, whereby said bar may move so as to swing said gate, and the offset frame permitting the swinging movement of said bar, without interference.
