To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. LEASMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at hanger which is capable of swinging, so that the entire gate may be swung open,
Madison, in the county of Lac qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to the art of gates, and more especially to an improved gate which is particularly well balanced, and which comprises novel features of construction.
Practically all gates that are now in use are hinged at one end to a supporting post, and depend upon various braces, to prevent sagging of the gate. In this character of gate, even with the braces, it is practically impossible to prevent the sagging, and if the sagging is relieved to any appreciable degree, the parts of the gate structure, as well as the braces to prevent sagging, are subjected to severe strains.
Therefore,'the present'invention aims to provide a gate structure including hanger means therefor, to support and equally balance the gate at its central portion, not only preventing sagging, but also allowing the gate to be opened and closed from either side of the fence.
The invention further aims to provide a swinging gate so mounted and including means whereby the gate may be adjusted vertically, so that the gate may be disposed according to the lay of the ground.
Furthermore, by providing an adjustable gate of this character, it is possible to prevent stock from passing under the gate, and if the gate is constructed large, for use on farms, the gate can be adjusted to prevent cattle from going over the gate, and also can be adjusted over the snow or rough ground.
The invention further aims to provide a gate supporting frame, which is capable of being adjusted to support gates of different sizes.
The invention {further aims to afford bracing means from various parts of the hanger construction, as well as parts of the gate construction.
The invention also aims to provide a and on which hanger the gate proper is adustably mounted centrally thereof, and capable of swinging movement, wherebythe gate may be swung open from either side, and also whereby only half of the gate may be swung open.
The invention further aims to providea gate structure proper mounted substantially midway its length, so that the gate proper can swing open upon either side of the hanger, so that either end of the gate may close the gate opening.
While the design and construction at present lllustrated and set forth 1s deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical formfor commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed. i
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed. i

ings, l designates a supporting post, which may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably tubular metal, and the lower end of this post is anchored, by means of threads or the like in a base plate 2, there being a plurality of braces 3 rising upwardly from the corners of the base plate 2 and secured at 4.- to the post. The lower end of the post and the base plate 2 with the braces are embedded below the surface of the ground, thereby acting to support the base perpendicularly.
Arranged on the post 1 are the upper and lower pairs of collars 5 and 6, and 7 and 8. These collars are secured on the post 1 adjustably, by means of the set screws 10.
A hanger for the gate proper is provided.
This hanger (which practically constitutes a hinge construction) comprises a supporting plate 11, and the upper and lower di verging hanger arms 12 and 13, which connect between the plates and the post 1. These hanger arms are constructed from angle iron, and each consists of the two sections 14 and 15, which are respectively connected to the angle iron section 16. It is obvious that the sections 14 and 15 are capable of being adjusted toward and from each other, by adjusting the bolts or the like 17 in other apertures or openings of the sections 14 and 15. It is to be noted that the arms diverge toward the post 1, and the end portions (which are in parallelism) of the sections 14: terminate in enlargements having openings or eyes 18, through which the post 1 passes. The collars 5 and '7 engage under the enlargements having the eyes 18, thereby supporting the hanger. The collars 6 and 8 are arranged above the enlargements having the eyes 18 to prevent upward movement of the hanger. The sections 14 of the arms of the hanger are connected and reinforced by the brace 19, the upper and lower ends of which have angularly extending parts 20, which are bolted at 21 to the sections 14:. This brace 19 comprisestwo sections 22 and 23, which are adjustably connected by means of the staple or yoke bolts 23 having nuts 24. It is ob vious that the staple or yoke bolts can be removed and inserted in certain other apertures of the sections 22 and 23, so that said sections may be adjusted. The sections 15 are pivotal y connected at 25 to the supporting plate 11, which is provided with a plurality of threaded openings 26. These openings 26 are arranged in series, and the apertures or openings of each series are arranged on an arcuate line concentric with the pivot 25 of the section 15. It will be noted that the short arms 27 of the sections 15 of the arms of the hanger are provided with set or thumb screws 28, and it is obvious that by adjusting the arms of the hanger on their pivots 25, the set or thumb curved corners, and is constructed of tubular metal, as shown. Preferably the curved corners of the gate frame are in the form of elbows 32. A suitable wire fabric, of a large mesh, as indicated at 33 is stretched on the gate frame. In order to mount the gate frame on the tubular rod 30, the upper and lower rods of the gate frame have se cured thereto laterally extending members or enlargements 3 provided with openings 35, in which the tubular rod 30 1s fixed, for instance as by means of set screws 36. Collars 37 and 38 are secured on the vertically disposed rod 30, the former being superimposed with relation to the latter and spaced therefrom. These collars 37 and 38 are secured. by set screws 39 to the rod. An intermediate collar 40 is arranged on the rod 30 between the fixed collars 3'7 and 38,
and this collar 40 upon diametrically opposite sides is provided with lateral pins 41, to which the forks 42 of the link 43 are pivotally connected. An operating lever lt is pivoted at 45 on the supporting plate 11 and the extremity of the angularly extending end portion 46 is pivotally connected at -17 to the end of the link 43. It will be noted that by moving the lever 4 f on its pivot, thereby causing its short arm to push or pull upon the link 43, the rod 30 may be adjusted axially to the bearing eyes 29, and since the gate frame is carried by the rod 30, the gate frame or gate proper may be adjusted relatively to the lay of the ground, or adjusted for various other purposes, say for instance for preventing stock from passing thereunder, or preventing stock from leaping over the gate. The supporting plate 11 is provided with an arcuate rack or toothed quadrant 49, and the lever is provided with a hand grip operated dog 50, for holding the lever 44 in different adjusted pivotal positions, that is according to the adjustment of the gate and the tubular rod 30.
A second post 51, which is similar to the post 1, is anchored in the ground and supported perpendicularly similar to the mounting and support of the post 1. This post 51 has secured thereto, by any suitable means, say for instance screws 52,

The shank of the latch has a trans verse pin 62, to engage the forward part of the plate 57. The shank of the latch is also provided with a reduced extension 63, surrounding which and interposed between the shoulder 64 and the lug 65 of the plate 57 is a spring 66, tensioning the latch in order.
to hold it normally outwardly, with its notch in engagement with one of the H nges of the T-plate 58. the plate 57 is a T-shaped lever 68, having one of its arms 69 connected to the reduced extension 63 of the shank 59 of the latch, by means of a link 70. A second latch mechanism similar to the one previously described and having its parts similarly designated, is carried by the other end of the gate, that is secured to the bar 55, and connected to the reduced extension of the latch of the second latch mechanism is a wire or cable 71. This cable or wire 71 is in turn connected to the other arm 72 of the T- shaped lever 68.- It is obvious that when grasping the handle 73 of the lever 68, and
tilting the same on its pivot the opposite latch members will be moved toward each other, so that they will respectively disengage the T-plate and the brace 23, thereby permitting the gate frame to be operated or swung on the vertical tubular rod 30. It is possible when the latch members are so disengaged, to not only swing the gate on the rod 30, but also to permit the gate and its hanger to be swung or oscillated to an open position on the perpendicular post 1. This can be accomplished by permitting the latch member of the second latch mechanism to reengage the brace 23, so that the gate frame and the hanger may move or swing as one body. At any time, whether the gate is open or closed, it is possible to adjust the gate frame vertically, by oscillating the lever 44 on its pivot 45, whereby, through the medium of the link 43, the rod 30 may be moved vertically, either up or down, so that the gate frame may be adjusted accord ingly to the lay of the ground. The gate can also be adjusted according to the lay of the ground, by adjusting the hanger, that is by loosening the set screw 10, and raising or lowering the collars 5 and 6, and 7 and 8 on the post 1. I/Vhile it has been shown that the arms 12 and 13 are constructed in sections, it is obvious, though not necessarily, that they may be constructed, each in a sin- Pivoted to an arm of 'Tgle piece, and alsomay be either angle iron "or channel iron-,preferably the latter. Other obvious changes maybe made in the minor details of construction, without departing from the spirit of. the invention, for instance'-tl1e-arms' 12 and 13 may be made tubular, or of solid rods. Also the members 23 may be made either tubular or of channel iron. Furthermore the braces or parts 55 may be tubular, instead of angular.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed. as newand useful is:
1. In a gate construction, a hanger supporting post, a hanger swingingly mounted thereon, said hanger comprising a vertical. member consisting of parts adjustable relatively to each other, said hanger also including members converging laterally toward each other, each of said members consisting of adjustable sections, a gate, certain of the sections of the converging members being adj'ustably connected to the gate, a latch post for one end of the gate, means for latching one end of the gate to the latch post, means for latching the opposite end of the gate to the vertical part of said hanger, one of said latching means including a member connected to the other latching means whereby upon movement of said member both latching means may be actuated simultaneously for unlatching the gate.
2. In a gate, a hanger supporting post, a hanger swingingly mounted thereon, said hanger comprising adjustable. sections, whereby the length and height of the hanger may be increased and decreased, a supporting plate adjustably connected to the hanger, a guide swingingly mounted midway its ends on said gate, and a lever pivotally mounted on the plate and being operatively connected to the gate for raising and lowering the gate, and latching means for both ends of the gate.
3.
