Specification of Letters Patent.
' PLATE-LIFTER.
ratentean nso, ieis.
. Application filed June 21, 1917. Serial No. 176,182.
citizen of the United States, residing at Sun man, in the county of Ripley, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Lifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plate lifters and particularly to devices of this character which are especially adapted for lifting hot plates, dishes, pans,'and the like.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and simple device of this character which is capable of ready adjust ment for plates of different diameters. 7
Another object is to provide a device which is easy to manipulate and which can be quickly and easily applied to the plate or pan, and which can be as easily and quickly released therefrom without danger of burn ing the hands of the user.
A further object resides in the novel means for spreading open the gripping jaws when the plate or pan is to be released.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device shown in gripping engagement with a plate.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device in open position and removed from the plate.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section taken vertical through the structure, with parts in elevation.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents a handle member on one end face of which there is secured a plate 11. The side edge portions of this plate are rolled as at 12, for engagement between the rolled portions 13 of the plates 14. There are two of these plates 14, and each one of said plates has its other end formed with a single tubular roll 15 which receives therein the connecting portion 16 of the pair of superimposed and outwardly bowed wires 17. These portions 16 are secured within.
the portions 15 so that they will not turn, but pt the entire wire structure connected therewith to move therewith on the portions 12 and '13. A pivot pin 18 is disposed through each pair of tubular portions 12 and 13, thereby providing a hinged connection between the plates 14 and the plate 11.
The other ends of the wires 17 are con nected by the members 19, as shown in the drawing.
Secured on the handle member are the guide eyes 20, and slidable through said eyes is the stem 21 of a spreading device for the bowed wire jaws 17. The outer end of the stem is formed with a pair of outwardly bowed arms which terminate in loops, the arms being represented at 22, while the loops are designated by the reference character 23. The loops embrace the wire jaws 17, so that by pulling the stem in a direction away from the jaws, the loop members will cause the spreading of the jaws, and a reverse movement of said stem will cause the inward movement of the aws whereby they will grip the edge of the plate 24 between their upper and lower wire portions.
Disposed in crossed relation to each other and secured at their opposite ends to the plates 14, are two coil springs 25. These springs tend to draw the plates 14 inwardly toward each other and thus cause the inward movement of the jaws so that they will firmly grip the edges of the plate therebetween. To release the plate it is only necessary to slide the stem 21 rearwardly by grasping the upturned loop 21, formed on the inner end thereof, whereupon the loops of the arms 22 will accomplish the spreading of the jaws 17, when the plate is free of said arms or jaws 17.
What is claimed is:
1. A plate lifter including a handle memher, a pair of plate gripping jaws pivotally mounted on one end of the handle member, a stem mounted on the handle member for longitudinal movement, outwardly bowed arms carried by the outer end of the stem, resilient means connecting the inner portions of the jaws, and loop members on the outer ends of the said arms embracing the said jaws and arranged for slidable movement therewith.
2. A plate lifter including a handle member, a plate secured to one end of the handle member and having its ends formed with tubular portions, plates having pairs of spaced tubular portions arranged at the ends of the first tubular portions, a pivot outer ends of the arms being formed with 10 member disposed through said tubular porloops which slidably embrace the said griptions, outwardly bowed 'plate gripping jaws 'ping' jaws. secured to the outer ends of the said plates, In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature 5 coilesprings secured to said plates and disin the presence of two witnesses.
posed therebetween, guides carried by the HARRY W. PROBST. handle member, astemslidable through the Witnesses:
guides and having a pair of outwardly EDWARD C. OLENUNG,
bowed arms on the outer end thereof, the PETER W. PROBST.
