UNITED STATES, PATENT OFFICE.
KARL HILOKMANN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIQZAS SI GNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WALTER WEHNER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SPITTbON-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 27, 1909.
Application filed. November 14, 1908. I serial No 462,655.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL HILOKMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoon-Carriers, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to tools or devices for the convenient carrying of spittoons from place to place, which will avoid the necessity.
of the carrier lifting up the spittoon by hand. The invention consists of that certain novel construction and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed. i
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved spittoon carrier. Fig. 2 is a side elevation reducedinsize, showing the tool supporting three spittoons. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the tool in open position.
My apparatus is constructed on the principle of the grapple.
1 and 2 are the curved arms of the tool,
pivoted together at 3, with the lower portions of the arms bent inward at 4, 4:, and provided with segmental arms 5, 5.
6 is a link or rod pivoted at the upper end of one of the arms 2,'at 7, and formed with a slot or loop 8, at the other end of the loop, which slot is engaged by'the pin 9 on the inner end of the other arm. The two arms 1 and 2 are of the same length, so that when the implement is in upright position, the link 6 extends horizontally across the inner ends of the arms, and on the link 6 between the ends of the arms, a handle 10 is mounted.
11 is a finger hook or pull, curved at 12, so as to rest and be held in vertical position 011 the arms 1, and 2, and the lower end of this hook forms "a pivot pin for thearms 1, and 2, being preferably riveted in position. An ordinary pivot pin, however, can be used to pivot the arms 1 and 2, together, and the finger pull 11, can be secured thereto in any desired Way. Y
The user carries the tool by grasping the hapldle 10, placing one finger in the finger u 11. his shown in Fig. 3, it is onlynecessary to draw the finger pull 11 toward the handle 10,
To open the device at the lower end,
and the bifurcated'arms 5, at the lower end are opened sufliciently to pass down over the upper portion of any spittoon, and by releasing the finger pull the arms embrace the spittoon so that it can be readily lifted. The arms 1 and 2 are of sufficient length to bring the handle portion at a convenient height for the hand of the user, and a number of spittoons 13, can be carried at once by placing one spittoon on the other, and then grasping the lowermost spittoon with the tool.
The implement when loaded with the spittoons, can be carried by the handle 10, or the finger pull 11, and the tongs will remain closed until the pull is given between the handle and the finger pull.
The use of the horizontal link 6, with the loop 8, forms a very convenient handle, and the device is readily under the control of the user, as to open it, a slight pressure of the hand. only is required, and the tool closes itself, and so long as the Weight of the spittoons is present this weight tends to keep the implement closed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character specified, a pair ofcurved arms pivoted together intermediate their ends, a link forming a handle pivoted to the outer end of one arm, and extending horizontallycto the outer end of the other arm, and means for'slidably connecting the link thereto, and a finger pull secured at the pivot of the curved arms and extending toward the handle, substantially as described.
2. Ina device of the character specified, a pair of curved arms pivoted together inter mediate their ends, a link pivoted to the outer end of onearm, said link provided with a longitudinal slot in its opposite end, with a pin on the outer end of the other arm engaging said slot to secure the link slidably to the arm, and a finger pull secured to the pivot of the curved arms and eirtending toward the KARL HILOKMANN.
