The invention relates to new `and useful improvements in throat plates for sewing machines` and more particularly to a throat" plate adapted to be used in Connection with a stitch forming 4mechanism for. forming a flat seam.

The object of the invention is to provide a throat plate having an opening in which the needles of stitch forming mechanisms lou cated one inadvance of the other coperate with a stitch tongue which projects Vinto the Openingand across which the looper thread of the front stitch forming mechanism is laid, said vstitch tongue having meansl for supporting said looper thread until after the stitches are formed by the rear stitch formin mechanism. l n. the drawings: f n

openings 4 4 for the outer webs of the feed dog 5. The throat plate is formed with an enlarged opening 20 and the feed dog 5 carries a plate 21 which extends into this opening. This plate 2l carries the stitch tongue 16 which is similar in construction to that above described. Said plate 21 has openings 17 17 for the needles 9 9 and the stitch tongue has a recess 19 for the needles 10 10.

I have shown the stitch tongue in Figs. 5 and 6 as mounted on the feed dog instead of the throat plate as I consider one the full equivalent of the other. The stitch tongue whether mounted on the feed dog of throat plate operates in precisely the same manner as above described. The recess. 19 may be, possibly, a little deeper in plate 21 so as' to permit the movement of the plate 21 with the feed dog without striking the needles.

In Fig. 7 of the drawings, I have shown a slightly modified form of the invention. In this form, the stitch tongue lginstead of having a recess in the end thereof, as above described, is formed with an opening 19El through which the rear pair of needles 10-10 pass. The stitch tongue in this form of the invention operates as above described to support the looper thread of the front stitching mechanism until after the stitches are formed by the rear stitching mechanism.

In Fig. 8 of the drawings, I have shown 'more or less diagrammatically in bottom plan view a seam formed on my throat plate. In this figure the fabric is indicated at F; the threads of the needles 9 9 are indicated at n n, while the thread of the looper coperating with these needles is indicated The threads of the needles 10 10 are indicated at fn/ fn/, while the thread of the looper coperating with these needles is indlcated at Z: It is these looper threads that are laid across the stitch tongue in the manner above described. s.

It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts` may be madewithout departing from the yspirit of the invention, as set forth in the appended claims. Q

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A throat plate having an opening to recelve the needles of stitching mechanisms arranged one in rear of the'other, a stitch tongl11`ecarried by the throat plate and extendlng rearwardly into said opening, said stitch tongue having a recess in the rear end thereof wherebyT the sides of the stitch tongue project beyond the needles of the rear stitching mechanism. Y

2. A throat plate having an opening to receive two pairs of needles one in rear of the other, the rear pair of needles being set closer together than the front pair of needles, said throat plate having a stitch tongue extending between the front needles, said stitch tongue having a recess in its rear end, whereby the sides of the stitch tongue extend beyond the rear needles.

The combination of a throat plate and a feed dog adapted to coperate with two pairs of needles one in rear of the other, the rear pair of needles being set closer together than the front needles, one of said elements having a stitch tongue extending between the front needles and formed with l a recess at its rear end to receive the rear needles. l

4. A plate having an opening to receive the needles of stitch forming mechanism, said needles being arrangedy in pairs one in rear of the other, the rear pair ofneedles being closer spaced than the front pair of receive the needles of stitch forming mechanisms arranged onein rear of the other, each of said stitch forming mechanisms .including spaced needles and a cooperating looper, the needles of the rear stitch forming mechanismbeing closer spaced than the front pair of needles,said throat plate havingv a stitch tongue which -projectsrearwardly into said opening across which the looper thread of the front stitching mechanism is placed, said stitch tongue having. a passage for the rear pair of needl s whereby the looper thread of the front pa r of needles is supported until after the same has passed the rear pair of needles.
