THROAT-PLATE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Be it known that I, CHESTERSMQNEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Throat-Plates for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing. and to the figures of reference marked thereon.

The invention relates to new and useful improvements in throat plates for sewing machines and more particularly to a throat plate which is adapted to be used in connection with a stitching mechanism for forming a flat seam. 7

An object of the invention is to provide a throat plate adapted to cooperate with two pairs of needles arranged one in rear of the other, wherein the front pair of needles is spaced a greater distance apart than the rearneedles, with a stitch tongue for the front pair of needles which" stitch "tongue terminates in advance of the rear needles, the throat plate having a space in rear of pair of needles.

I have shown my improved throat plate 1 as secured to the free end of a cylindrical work support 2 by suitable screws 3-3. Said throat .plate is provided with spaced parallel openings H which receive the Specification of Letters Patent.

The throat plate 1 has'a stitch tongue 13 which projects rearwardly into theopening 8. The needles 9-9 pass along the oppo- .60 the front pair of needles 9-9 beneath thesite sides of this stitch tongue 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This stitch tongue 13 is substantially equal to the width of the space between the needles and said stitch tongue terminates directly in rear of the needles 9-'9. The looper thread of the looper 11 is laid across this stitch tongue 13 and as the looper thread slides off the stitch tongue it will be stitched down by the threads of the needles 99.

Above the work support is a presser foot 13 which is provided with a needle opening 14:. Said presser foot is also provided with an opening 16 for the needles 1010. A

stitch tongue 17 extends into said opening looper thread joining the needles loops of the needles 99, as above noted is laid across this stitch tongue13 and the stitch tongue prevents buckling of the fabric edges during the setting of the stitches of the Widely spaced needles. The free space in rear of the stitch tongue permits the closely Topening 7 for the feed dog. It also has an enlarged opening 18 locatcd centrally between the openings l4. The feed dog 5 has its webs at the forward end between the side webs cut away and a plate 19 is secured to the feed dog by a suitable screw 20. This plate 19 is slotted at 21 and 22 to receive respectively the needles 99 and the plate extends between the needles as at 23 forming a stitch tongue; this stitch tongue terminates in advance of the closely spaced needles 10- 10 in the hammer above described, in connection with the stitch tongue 13. In other'words, I have shown in Figs. 5 and 6 that I consider the placing of the stitch tongue on the feed dog a full equivalent of the placing of the stitch tongue on the-throat plate.

In Fig. 7 I have shown more or less diagrammatically, a bottom plan view of a seam stitched on my improved throat plate.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a throat plate and pairs of needles arranged one in rear of the other, the needles of the front pair being spaced a greater distance than the needles of the rear pair, a looper cooperating with each pair of needles below the throat plate, a cross thread laying devicelcooperating with each pair of needles above-the throat plate, said throat plate being provided with an opening for the pairs of needles and with a stitch tongue which eXtends-intothe needle opening therein between the front pair of needles and terminates adjacent the rear pair of needles.

2. The combination of a throat plate,a presser foot, and pairs of needles arranged one in rear of the other, said needles of the front pair being spaced a greater distance than the needles of the rear pair, a looper cooperating with each pair of needles below, the throat plate, a cross thread device cooperating with each pair of needles above the.
