Speoication of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 27, 1917. Serial No. 193,555.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known. that I, WILIJAM d. SonmrrnLrN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and limproved Sur 'cal Ampul, of which the following is a ull, clear, and exact descriptlon.
This invention relates to an ampul or capsule container designed` to hold a tincture of iodin or any other antiseptic Huid, and the invention has to deal more particularly with the construction of the container whereby it is especially adapted for army use, although it is not necessarily limited thereto.
Heretofore it has been proposed to make the ampul or container of glass which is broken open at one end when it is desired to pour out the contents on a wound, but this is dangerous, as sometimes spllnters or fragments of glass will be introduced into the wound, and also a puncture or wound may be made in the ngers when breaking the glass ampul.
rThe object of the present invention is to provide a non-breakable, easily-portable and instantly-available emergenc supply of iodin tincture or other antiseptic duid by making the container of paran wax or ozocerite, which can be readily opened by the finger-nail, or by the teeth when `one hand is disabled and the other hand is using the ampul, without danger from fragments of the paramn container if they enter the wound, it being recognized that paraffin is not deleterious.
Preferably the wax container with the antiseptic therein is arranged in a suitable box to revent injury, and the container ,is Yof suc size as to contain sucient tincture of iodin for one application. The protective box or 4casin in which the ampul is contained is pre erably separable in the middle so that when the cover is removed a portion of the ampul will project and the tip can be opened for pourin -the contents out without the necessity o withdrawing the ampul from the body of the box..
For a more complete understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and claims taken in connection with the accompanying d which lar .char
cate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ampul.
lig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof; an
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the ampul in the protective case or box.
Referring to the drawing, the ampul comprises a body l made of 'suitable material, such as paramn wax or ozocerite, the body being tubular and having taperin closed ends 2, whereby a hermeticall sea ed container or capsule is obtained fihi' holding a' suitable quantity of tincture of iodin or other antiseptic Huid 3. lin other words, the ampul is a container havingv flexible, pliable walls which are not easily broken and which can be readily severed by the finger-nails or by the teethA when the ampul is to be opened to pour out the contents.
The ampul is preferably. rotected in a. casing, such as a turned woo box com rising a body d and cap 5, the depth o the body being such that approximately half of the ampul extends out of the same when the cap is removed. This is advantageous, because the ampul is always available, even in case it should stick in the case d, due to the heat causing the parain to soften and adhere to the walls of the case or body d. When thus incased theampul is especlall adapted for a soldier-s kit, whereby an antlseptic will be always available for a wound.
From the foregoing description taken in y connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while l[ have described the principle of operation, together with the article which ll now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, l desire to have it understood that the article shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, f prlam as new and desire to secure by Letters a ent:
l. A hist-aid ampul comprising a cono tainer of waxy material having a melting point about one hundred and w Fahrenheit, the container being pointed at iti,1 'end and-holding an alcoholic solution of 1o m.-
2. A rst-aid ampul comprising a con- 5 tainero'f parain pointed at its end and holding an oleoholic solution of iodin.
3. A first-aid ampul com rising a container of garain and havmg both ends pointed, an a holder composed of two parts in either of which the ampul may be held 10 with a, pointed end projectm WILLIAM J. SCH FFELIN.
