To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. BARHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alden, in the" county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in oil cans and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with means whereby the oil is forced from the spout in a positive manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for forcing a certain amount of oil out of the can, the amount being regulatedby the contents of the can and by the length of time the can is held in tilted position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cylinder in the can with means therein for forcing the oil therefrom when the can is tilted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and 1n which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
In these figures 1 represents the body of the can, made of any desired shape and of any suitable material and provided with the usual screw cap 2 having the spout 3 attached thereto. In carrying out my invention I provide a cylinder 4 of adiameter which will permit 'thecylinder to be passed through the opening in the can and said cylinder extends from the bottom of the can to the cap 2. I prefer to solder the end of the cylinder on to the bottom of the cap so that when the cap is removed the cylinder will be removed also. The upper end of the cylinder is provided with an opening 5 which communicates with the spout 3. At
thebottom the metal forming the cylinder is cut away to provide the points 6 which are slightly bent inwardly to form a seat for a ball 7, of substantially the same diameter as the interior of the cylinder, so as to make a close fit therewith. Openings 8 are formed in the lower part of the cylinder just above the said ball so that the oil in the can will flow into said cylinder above the ball.
I prefer to form the upper end of the cylinder by cutting slots in the metal thereof to form tabs 9 and then turnin said tabs over to form the top, the said tabs being of such a length as to leave the opening 5 in the top.
When the can is filled and the cap placed thereon the ends of the points 6 rest on the r bs.
bottom of the can and the oil will flow into the cylinder through the openings 8 therein until the level of the oil in said cylinder is the same as that in the can. When the can is tilted the ball 7 will move by gravity toward-the other end of the cylinder, forcing the oil ahead of it and through the spout. If there is not enough air escaping around the cap into the can, a small hole may be provided in the top of the cylinder for the admission of air. It will be seen that only the oil within the cylinder will be ejected. When the can is righted the ball will return to the bottom of the cylinder so as to permit the cylinder to be filled again ready for the next operation.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
