BUG-BEATER.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, Groen L. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nappanee, in the county of Elkhart and State of indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rug-Beaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable lothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to rug beaters, that is to devices for beating dust from rugs and carpets, and has particular relation to those of the type in which the beater is held in position by the foot and actuated by the rand of the operator to deliver' a succession of blows upon a rugor carpet, in order to drive out the dust and filth. Usually in cleaning a rug or carpet, it is taken out of doors, spread upon the grass and beaten Sometimes it is hung upon a line and beaten, sometimes it is held at the ends and shaken. In all of these the fabric is apt to be injured or the work un- .evenly and improperly done. ln using a device of the character of mine the fabric is spread upon the grass, fully supported everywhere, and is then subjected to a succession of rapid smart blows just vigorous enough to drive out the dust without hurting the fabric. The device is moved over the carpet as needs be, and the dust removed without the excessive fatigue induced in the operators back by the ordinary hand-held beaters, when the carpet is dat and without the strain upon the carpet which it gets when hung over a line, vthough my device may, in some circumstances be used to beat carpets where so hung. Devices like mine may also be used to clean carpetsand rugs in their places of use, z'. c. on the floor, though this vwill usually be found objectionable as is obvious.

One of the features, among others, of my present invention is the construction of the beater crank-shaft and crank, integral, all of a suitable piece of bent and twisted wire, which cannot get out of order or be injured. Another feature is the provision of a structure in which the actuating handle may be readily detached. My way of securing the foot piece or stirrup piece is another.

vice complete in full lines, and in dotted l l `made of a piece of wire looped at 2 and crossed at 3. rlhe right-hand leg, Fig. 1, is bent at substantial right angles to form a crank shaft ll, which crank shaft meets the other leg at 5, is twisted together with it, the two being bent at 6 to form a crank and continued in the parallel arms 7 which form spring supports for the pintles 8 formed by bending said arms at right angles. lllhese engage suitable sockets 9 in the ferrule 10 of an actuating handle 11. rlhe crank l is held in a groove, 12, formed in the underside or bottom of base member 13, formed of hard wood 'or other suitable substance, by means of staples 14. VUpon the two ends of the crank shaft, as Vclose to the base piece as practicable, l pivotally mount a foldingfoot-holding piece or stirrup 15. This stirrup `so called, while preferably pivoted for folding, may be rigid with the foot piece. rlhe upper part of the base piece is flat and the lower part or underside flat and smooth so that the operator, with her foot thrust through the stirrup, may readily hold the base piece in position and move the device about as she wishes. Ready movement may be still further facilitated if desired by rollers, 16, a pair being shown iu Fig. 3 mounted upon the crank shaft.

lt will be seen that l have produced a simple, strong and durable rug beater with durable and efficient holding and actuating means. rlhe beater' proper is made of stiff wire, say No. 6 gage, and the handle and foot block or base piece of maple or other suitable wood or other material. The crank being made of the twisted wire is strong and rigid just where strength and rigidity are needed, while the long flexible beater is integral therewith and receives without play or lost motion all the impulse given to the crank by the reciprocated handle and may be made to whip or beat a fabric with accurately gaged force and direction. The spring arms 7 permit the ready detachment of the handle 11, the loop, 15, may be folded down and the whole device knocked down and made to occupy avery small space. `It will be noted that my beater l is mountedv on the twisted wire crank-shaft .obliquetothe crank. This mounting"insures an inclined position of the beater when the crank-isiv horizontal and thus effects quick approach of the beaterI tov the work. Atthe same` time the device may be almost instantly set up ready for use, without'the use of tools,
