Description

NICKOLAS THELEN.
Improvement in Jack-Head.
Patented April 30,1872.
www
auunuuuismailllnmum. MIIIIIIIIIIIIIHEQAIEIIIIIIIH H Mr@ Z UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
NICKOLAS THELEN, OF SGHENECTADY, NEW YORK.
IMPRVEMENT IN JACK-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,346, dated April 30, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIcKoLAs TIIELEN, of the city of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ack-Heads and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which forms a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an improved jack-head and screw, for hoisting, lifting, pulling, or pushing, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view. Fig. 2 is a section, and Fig. 3 a plan view.
A represents the screw, provided with a hook, B, at one end. This screw passes through a screw-sleeve, C, attached to the center of or forming part of a disk, D, through the center of which the screw also passes, the femalescrew threads passing through or extending through both the sleeve and the disk. Around the circumference of' the disk D is formed a ange, upon which is placed a ring, E, having two hooks, G G, as shown. Around the sleeve C is placed a head, H, which is allowed to revolve in either direction, but cannot move either up or down, it resting upon the disk E, and a set-screw, a, passing through the head into a circumferential groove on the screwsleeve. On one side of the head H is a socket or tube, I, for the insertion of the lever or other device by means of which the head is turned. The head His further enlarged, or provided with extensions, on two sides, opposite each other, through which pass spring-bolts b b.
These bolts enter holes in the disk D, and the ends, which enter said holes, are beveled on one side, so that by turning the head in one direction the bolts will slide out of the holes on the disk, and hence the head will revolve without turning the disk and screw-sleeve; but by turning the head in the opposite direc tion the disk and sleeve will turn with the head, and hence raise or lower the same on the screw A, as the case may be. On the upper ends of the spring-bolts b b are levers d d, by means of which the bolts are turned to reverse the motion at will, said levers and bolts being held in place by a top-plate, J.
This entire head may be used on the jacks now in common use; and, by using a bolt instead of the screw A, it can be used on cider or wine presses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The screw-sleeve C with disk D, constructed as described, the sleeve with a circumferential groove and the disk with a series of holes, all substantially for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The head H, provided with socket I, spring-bolts b b, and levers d d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination ot' the screw-sleeve C, disk D, and head H with spring-bolts b b and levers d d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination of a screw, A, screwsleeve C, disk D, ring E, hooks G G, head H, socket I, bolts b b, levers d d, and top plate J, all substantially as a-nd for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I atx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NICKOLAS THELEN. Witnesses:
STEPHEN YATEs, CHRISTOPHER PETERS.
