Be it known that I, Monomer BROWN, of Huntington, in the county of Gabell and State of \Vest Virginia, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements inLifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in

This invention relates to lifting-jacks oi the screw kind, which are especially designed for use on railroads, but which are adapted for raising heavy weight generally; and it consists in combining a detachable lever-dog with A a perforated hub on the jaclcscrew, and with collars loosely applied on this screw, which have a fulcrum-pin fixed to them, whereby the said lever-dog can he used either right or left handed, and an intermittent rotary move- 0 ment can be imparted to the jack-screw without detaching the dog from its fulcrum, as will be fully understood from the following de scription, when taken in connect-ion with the annexed drawings.
A designates the hollow standardof the jack, in the upper end of which is tapped the jack-screw B, having on its upper end the head 0. These parts may be constructed in the usual manner common to the screwg'acks 40 used on railroads and other places for lifting heavy loads.
On the upper part of the screw B, I rigidly apply a cylindrical hub, E, which has holes a a, diametrically through it, arranged at rcgu- 4.5 lar intervals apart, and. above and below this huh I loosely apply on the threadless part of the screwshaft B collars I) D, which are rigidl y secured together by pins GG, the former of which serves as the fulcrum for a leverdog, F, used in turning the screw-shaft duro ing the act of raising or lowering a weight. This lever-dogF may be of any desired length.
It has formed on one end an enlarged head or dog, presenting a concave edge, b, adapted to fit snugly against the circumference of the perforated hub E, from which head projects a strong beveled tooth, (1, adapted to enter any one of the perforations through the said hub. The head of the lever-dogF is also con structed with astrong hook, c, which is adapted to freely engage with the fulcrum-pin G, and
at the same time allow the tooth d to enter one of the perforations a in the hub E, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
For the purpose of preventing an accidental detachment of the lever-dog from its fulcrumpin and hub during the act of raising a weight, I employ asai'ety-pin, e, which is removably' applied to the collars D D, and located in such relation to said fulcrum-pin and hub that when this pin'is in its place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it will prevent the lever-dog from casually leaving its fulcrumpin.
It will be observed that the lever-dog is reversible for either raising or lowering the 7 5 screw-shaft, and that it is readily adjusted to the jack by first hooking it on the fulcrumpin and moving the tooth into one of the perforations in the hub E. I now have a powerful leverage by which to turn the screwshaft 13.
The safety-pin e is inserted in its place through the collars D I) after the lever-dog is applied to the jack.
By my invention, which is cheaply applicable to well-known screw-jacks, I dispense with ratchets and pawls and springs, and greatly simplify and exhaust the value of screw-jacks.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 0 Patent, is-
1.
