To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PARKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Leipsic, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Electric Lock-Switch; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to electric switches. It particularly relates to a kick switch usable in connection with automobiles for completing electric connection of the magneto or the induction coil of the engine as may be desired, for causing the operation of the ignition means of the engine of the automobile. By my invention is provided a means whereby the switch block which supports and contains the switch parts may be inclosed and locked so that the connection may be completed only after a key or other unlocking means has been operated to unlock the switch. Also by my invention, is provided a means whereby the switch-block may be secured in position on the dashboard or other part of the automobile by means located in the switch block and the inclosing cover may be easily secured and released from the block only after the switch or its actuating means has been turned to a certain position relative to the block and cover which can be performed only after the switch or the actuating means is unlocked.
The invention may be contained in many forms of constructions usable for different purposes, all of which come within the purview of my claims hereinafter appended. To show the practicability of my invention I have selected an electric kick switch commonly used in connection with automobiles as an example and shall describe it hereinafter. The construction selected is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates a front view of the electric kick switch. Fig. 2 illustrates a front view of the switch, the inclosing cover and the switch actuating arm being removed. Fig. 3 illustrates a rear view of the switch block. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the electric kick switch taken on the line 41- 1 indicated in Fig. 1.

1, Fig. 1, is the inclosing cover which covers the switch block 2, shown in Figs. 2 and 4, on which the electric switch is mounted. The cover is provided with a lock, preferably of the barrel type, for locking the cover to the switch block. A cylindrical shell or housing 10 is rotatably supported in the cover 2 and is secured to the switch arm 11 in any suitable way, such as by the looking pin 12 shown in Fig. 2, to cause rotation of the shell 10 by movement of the switch arm 11. The switch arm 11, having considerable length, enables positive and certain movement of the shell 10 in operating the switch contacts to close and open the circuit. A knob 14 may be secured to the end of the arm 11. The cylindrical shell 10 extends through an opening formed in the cover and is secured in position for rotative movements by means of the ring 13, which is located within the cover 2 and is threaded on the shell 10.
The shell 10 is provided with a barrel 15. The barrel 15 is provided with the usual key slot 16, and the barrel 15 and shell 10 are provided with the usual tumblers 17 which are slipped back and forth in thebarrel 15 and the shell 10 according to the contour of the edge of the key to cause their ends to register with the surfaces'of the bar rel 15 and theshell 10 when the proper key 18 is inserted therein for permitting the barrel 15 to be rotated by the key 18 rela tive to the shell 10 in the manner well known in the art.
The shell is provided with a locking pin 20. The portion of the shell in which it may be located may be made integral therewith or attached thereto. The pin is adapted to protrude radially outward from the shell when the barrel 15 is in looking position. The barrel 15 is provided with a cam 21 which operates upon the head of the pin 20 to push the pin 20 against the operation T of the spring 22 which is located intermediate the head of the pin and the wall of the shell 10. A block 23, which maybe integral with a ring 24, is secured to the cover 1. The block 23 is provided with a recess or hole 25 into which the pin 20 may be inserted by the operation of the cam 21. When the nose of the cam forces the pin 20 radially outward, the outer end of the pin enters the recess 25, so as to lock the shell 1Q relative to the cover 1 and prevent move ment of the shell 10 and the switch actuating arm 11.
The cover 1 is secured to the switch block 2 in such a way that the means for securing the block to the dashboard or other part of the automobile is inclosed and sealed by the operation of the key and also the cover is secured to the block by a means that can only be unfastened when the switch arm has been turned from the normal switch locking position. The cover 1' fits into a rabbeted flange 30 formed integral with the switch block so that the cover sets into the rabbeted edge of the flange 30 which prevents rotation of the cover when it is in position on the switch block. The cover 1 is provided with an engaging ear 31 which is adapted to engage an ear or finger 32 secured to the switch block 2 by means of the screws 33. The ear 31 may be inserted under the finger 32 and the cover 1 shifted transversely relative o the block 2 so as to cause the recessed or countersunk opening 34 to register with the threaded hole 35. When the switch arm 11 is unlocked and moved relative to the cover 1 a screw 37 may be inserted through the opening 34 and into the tapped hole 35 of the switch block 2. The screw cannot be inserted or removed unless the switch arm 11 is removed from its locked position which may be done only after the key has been operated to unlock the shell 10 and the switch arm 11. The switch block is provided with a movable contact 40 which makes contact at all times with the spring contact 41 which may be connected to the ignition plugs of the automobile engine. The movable contact 40 is suitably supported in a hub or block of insulating material 42. The hub 42 may be pivotally supported on the switch block 2 or if desired, the housing or shell 10 may be provided with an extension having a cylindrical portion 43 which will extend through the hub 42 and into the switch block 1 for the purpose of keeping the hub 42 in axial alinement with the switch contacts which are arranged around the axis of the shell 10 and the switch actuating arm. The switch block 42 may be provided with a suitable bearing 44 to receive the cylindrical end 43 of the extension secured to the shell 10. The hub 42 may be removably connected with the shell 10 in any way desired to cause rota tion of the contact 40 upon operation of the arm 11. In the form of he invention shown the extension is provided with a square or cubical portion 50 which penetrates a square opening 51 formed in the hub. When the hub 42 and contact 40 is turned, electric connection may be completed between contact 40 and contact 46, or between contact 40 and contact 47.

Also, connections may be made to the parts of the switch by means of wires which extend through openings formed in the back of the switch block. The contacts 41, 46 and 47 are secured to the switch block 2 by means of bolts which extend through the back of the switch block in a suitable way well known in the art. A radially extending tongue 60 may also be provided for limiting the extent of movement of the hub 42 and actuating switch arm 11. The tongue 60 is limited by the walls of the recess of the block in which it is located.
The switch selected and described my be greatly varied in the arrangement and manufacture of its parts and in the substitution of elements having equivalent functions and such modifications may be used for many varied purposes and still contain the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a lock, the combination of a block case, a cover for closing the case, a shell mounted on the cover for rotative movements relative to the cover, a barrel lock rotatably supported in the shell, means for locking the shell to the cover to prevent rotative movements, an arm keyed to the shell for rotating the shell, the shell having a cubical extension, and a rotative member located in the case of the block having a square opening to register with the cubical portion.
