To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEVEN A. KINGHAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Renwick, in the county of Humboldt and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in PackageTies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference generally to package fasteners adapted principally in the tying of papers and other articles in packages, and one so designed to not only permit of the flexible tying element to be properly wrapped around the articles to be tied in an eflective and expeditious manner, but fur: ther establish a firm connection of the tying element around the articles in order to prevent the displacement of the same during the carrying, handling or transit of the articles through the mails.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the tying plate showing the same applied to a stack of letters;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the plate with the flexible element connected therewith; and
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of connecting the free end of the flexible tying element with the keeper.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, the package tie generally comprises a skeleton plate 5 embodying a substantially D-shaped frame 6 including a straight shank 7 bent at one end to provide a finger engaging eye 8. The opposite end 9 of the shank is bent in an opposite lateral direction to the finger engaging eye 8 to provide a straight horizontally extending limb 10 bent in a downward and inward direction to provide a downwardly and inwardly inclined limb 11 connected to one another by the outwardly bulged connecting portion 12. The material at the free end 9 of the shank is struck upwardly as at 13 to provide in the under face of the shank a knot engaging socket 14, opening out through the upper face of the shank at a point of intersection of the limb 1O therewith, permitting of the string to pass through the opening 15 of said shank. At the point of intersection of the inwardly extending inclined limb 13 with the curved connecting portion 12, I have provided. a tongue 16 which is bent toward the limb 13 to provide a substantially U-shaped resilient clip 17 disposed at right angles with and in alinement to the limb 13.
In the tying operation of the package, the knotted end 18 of the flexible tying element 19 is seated within the knot engaging socket 14 and the cord or tying element 19 is brought out through the opening 15 and thence wrapped longitudinally of the package with the transverse portion 20 of the tying element first engaging at opposite ends of the resilient clip 17. The free terminal of the tying element is thence brought over and around the'clip to firmly hold the tying element against slipping.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new, is
As a new article of manufacture, a package tying device embodying a substantially skeleton formed plate including a straight shank provided at one end with a knot engaging socket, a finger engaging loop provided on the opposite end of said shank, the first mentioned end of said shank being extended to provide a straight horizontal limb, an inclined limb formed integral with the shank adjacent the opposite end thereof, a curved connedtingportion connecting the first mentioned limb With the second mentioned limb, a tongue formed at the point 5 of intersection of the inclined limb With the curved connecting portion said tongue being bent to provide a resilient clip arranged at right angles with respect to the inclined limb and in a plane therewith, and a flexible tying element secured in the knot 10 engaging socket of the shank.
