To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR F. M. SPIES, acitizen of the United States, residing-at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Necktie-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a holder for neck-ties for mens wear, the neck-tie bow or other tie-formation being shaped on the holder itself, so that both the holder and the neck-tie together may belifted from the collar-button when tliewearerdesires, and

' subsequently replaced on the collar button without unloosening or disturbing the necktie bow formation.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which,

The tie-holder may be made of any suitable sheet material, such as sheet-metal or sheet-celluloid, something that will retain its form but which will yield or flex.

The thin base-plate 9, is to go at the front of a mans neck and is curved from end to end toconform with the collar when the latter is in position about the neck. The base-plate at its center, and lower part has a downwardly-project-ing portion, 10, which is provided with an opening 11, adapted to take over the head 12, of an ordinary collarbuttcn which holds a collar 13, to the front part of a shirt neck-band 14.

The base-plate 9, also has two parallel vertical slots 15, one being at each of two Specification of Letters Patent.

opposite sides of said collar-button opening 11. A horizontal bar 16, extends across this opening on the outer side of the plate and the bar is loose or free to move up and down with its ends 17, passed through the vertical slots 15, from the front side to the rear where said ends are bent substantially Z- shape to form lugs, as shown in F ig. 3, to retainthe movable bar from disconnecting. \Vhenthe base-plate 9, ,is in position, and the collar-button head 12, projects'laterally, as shown in Fig. 4, the movablebar '16, will move downand engage behind the protruding collar-button head 12, and thereby the said bar 16, will prevent the neck-tie holder from accidentally slipping off the collarbutton.

The base-plate further has a slot or opening 18, extending longitudinally relative to the base plate 9, above the collar-button opening 11; said opening 18 allows one end 19, of the neck-tie to be passed from the front into and drawn through the opening as seen in Fig. 7, when forming or fashioning the tie.

A bar 20, extends along the upper side of and closes the opening or slot 18, and said bar is concave along its upper edge. The slot or opening 18, is of a length to accommodate the widest four-in-hand tie that may be used in that during the threading of the tie through the holder one end thereof will be passed up in front of the central portion 10, then through the slot or opening 18, as shown in Fig. 7, and finally said tie-end will be extended over and down in front of the bar 20, and passed through the knot as in Fig. 8.

At each end the base-plate has a slot 23, with a vertical bar 24, at the outer side of said slot, and the outer vertical edge 21, of this bar 24:, is guarded at both its upper and lower ends by projecting or extended lugs 22, so that when the tie is folded around the bar 2 the lugs 22, will prevent the same from slipping vertically on the bar either upwardly or downwardly. The projecting lugs are therefore guard-lugs to prevent vertical displacement of the tie-fold about the bar.

It will be observed that the end 19, of the neck-tie that has been drawn through the horizontal opening 18, as seen in Fig. 7, can be folded forward and then downward at and the front to cover and conceal the top-bar 20, of the base plate, and to complete the tie-formation, as indicated in Fig. 8, which latter shows the final View of the tie and holder. The opposite ends of the tie-loop, and the lugs on the ends of the holder would be concealed from view when the holder is worn on a turn-down or turn-over collar.

Obviously the lugs 22, can be made of different shape and relatively much smaller than shown in the drawing; and the proportion in size of other parts may be varied to suit the style of collar and the width of neck-tie that may be in vogue.

The bar 16, may be raised to release its engagement with the collar-button head 12, and then. both the holder and tie formed thereon may be removed.

From the foregoing description the structure of the tie-holder, and the method of placing the tie fabric on the holder, and producing at the front the bow, loop, or other tie-formation will be understood.

Having described my invention what I claim is,

A neck-tie holder comprising upper and lower longitudinal bars,-the upper edge of the upper bar being concaved midway between its ends, an end cross-bar near each end of and connecting the two longitudinal bars said end cross-bars being guarded at both the upper and lower ends by projecting lugs, inner cross-bars also connecting thesaid longitudinal bars and forming a slot at the inner side. of each end bar and also forming a longitudinal slot between the up per and lower bars and the lower longitudinal bar being provided with movable'means for engaging a collar button.
