Description

L. G. MILLER'& E. C. LONG,
COMBINED REINFORCING PLATE AND HINGE FOR CAR DOORS. APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 4. I917.
Patented Jan. 22,1918
. sirens PATENT LOUIS G. MILLER AND EDWARD 0. LONG, OF WESTMONT BOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED REINFORCING-PLATE AND HINGE F03, CAR-DOORS.
Application filed. September 4, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LoUIs Gr. isflIILLnR and EDVARD (J. Lone, citizens of the United States, and residents of the borough of estinont, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, (whose post-oflice addresses are Johnstown, Pennsylvania,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Reinforcing-Plates and Hinges for Car-Doors; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to the construction of steel dumping cars with particular reference to a combined reinforcing plate and hinge for the drop doors thereof.
The principal object of our invention is to provide a combined reinforcing plate and hinge in order to minimize the amount of material used for stiffening and strengthening the transverse hopper sheets, thereby adding to the rigidity of said sheets with out use of unnecessary and extraneous parts.
A further object of our invention is to provide a combined reinforcing plate and hinge mechanism which shall embody the features of simplicity, economy and efficiency.
Further objects of our invention will appear from the description and an examination of the drawings herewith.
Referring now to the annexed sheet of drawings, which forms part of this specification :Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional elevation through one of the hoppcrs of a car taken substantially on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional elevation of the lower portion of a car taken on the line IIII of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional elevation taken on the line II of Fig. 2, but drawn on a larger scale; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the reinforcing hinge plate; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the reinforcing hinge plate, the door hinges being shown in section; and Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the reinforcing hinge plate taken on the line VIVI of Fig. 4.
Referring now to the characters of reference on the drawings -1 represents a portion of the car in general, 2 one of the car side hopper sheets, 3 is the cover plate or central ridge of the car forming a portion of the hopper and extending downwardly to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1918.
Serial No. 189,480.
form part of the door jamb, while l and 5 are transverse hopper sheets. 6 represents our reinforcing hinge plate, which is substantially of U-section with an outer flange 7 and an inner flange 8, said reinforcing plate being secured to the under side of the transverse hopper sheet by means of rivets. Notched openings 9 are made in the reinforcing hinge plate 6, to provide a space for the door hinge 11, the end of which encircles the hinge rod 13. Square washers 10 are fastened to the hinge rod 13 to prevent lateral movement of the hinge and hinge rod. 12 are the car doors which are preferably formed of pressed steel in the shape of a shallow pan or box with flanges projecting on all sides thereof and 14: are cotter pins in the ends of the hinge rods to retain them in place.
Our reinforcing hinge plate is made of considerable depth, which is much greater than an ordinary hinge, thereby forming a strengthening plate and hinge member combined in one piece conducing to lightness, economy and efficiency.
Although we have shown and described our invention in considerable detail, we do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction specified, but we may use such substitutions, modifications or equivalents thereof as are embraced within the scope of our invention as pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A reinforcing plate of deep U-section secured by its outstanding flanges to the hopper plate of a drop bottom car, the lower portion of said U-plate being adapted to receive the door hinge rod.
2. The combination with the bottom sheet of a car, of a deep U-shaped reinforcing plate, secured by its outstanding flanges near the edge of said bottom sheet, the lower portion of said U-shaped member being provided with slots adapted to receive the door hinges, and a hinge rod mounted therein adapted to rotatably support said door hinges.
3. The combination with the floor sheet of a car, of a deep Ushaped reinforcing plate secured thereto by its outstanding flanges, a hinge rod within said U-shape reinforcing plate, slots in the lower part of said reinforcing plate, strap members the Ill) ends of which are in said slots and which encircle the hinge rod, and means for securing said strap members to a car door.
a. The combination with the floor sheet of a car of a deep U-shaped reinforcing plate secured thereto by its outstanding flanges, said reinforcing plate being secured to the underside of the hopper sheets, slots in the 7 lower part of said reinforcing plate, a hinge rod within thelower part of said reinforc- 7 ing plate, strap members the ends of which Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of late'zits.
signatures.
of a car, of a deepcU-shapedreinforcing hinge rod, strap members the ends of which 7 are in said slots and mounted on said hinge rod, and means for securing said strap mem bers to a car door. 7
In witness whereof We hereunto affix our LOUIS e. MILLER; EDWARD] 0. LONG.
