MOUNTING FOR SLIDING- DOORS.

Be it lvnovfn that l, ihn" i GAGNON, a citizen of the United el" Aesiding at Papineau, in the county of Lroquois and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ivfountings for Sliding Doors; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in mountings for sliding doors and the object thereof is to provide simple and efficient means for permitting the door to be locked in numerous positions by forcing it into frictional Contact with the wall adjacentl which it operates, the invention being adapted primarily for use on freight cars but being adaptable for other purposes.
With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a freight car showing the invention applied thereto, the door being locked in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the locking mechanism of the door released, said door being partly open;
3 is a horizontal sectional view on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. i is a similar view as seen on the plane indicated by the line 1 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section taken on the plane of the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and

in specifically describing the structure shown in the drawings above briefly described, similar characters will be empl ved to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end, the numeral 1 designates one side wall of a freight car, said wall having a door opening 2 to be' closed by a sliding door 3, the mounting of the latter constituting the gist of the present invention.

Upper and lower horizontal tracks 4; and 5 are secured to the wall 1 above and below the opening 2, said tracks extending along said wall from this opening in the usual manner. fr pair of spaced carriages 6 preferably in the form of castings are mounted on the upper track 4 and are equipped with rollers 7 traveling on said track while a pair of lower carriages 8 are disposed on the lower track 5, these carriages being also preferably constructed of castings and having upper and lower rollers 9 and 10 engaging the upper and lower edges of track 5. rEhe upper castings 6 are spaced apart by a horizontal bar 11 bolted or otherwise secured at its ends to said castings while a similar bar 12 serves to rigidly retain the castings 8 in proper relation.
A pair of upright bars 13 are flattened at their upper and lower ends to provide attaching feet 14 which are riveted or bolted to the carriages 6 and 8, said bars being spaced outwardly from the door 3. Attachin g plates 15 of hook-shaped hinge members 16 are riveted or secured in other suitable manner to the upper and lower ends of the bars 13 (see Figs. 1 and 2) or if desired, said plates may be secured to the ends of the bars 11 and 12 as shown in Fig. 6. The hinge members 16 are received in eyes 17 on the free ends of crank arms 18 which extend laterally in one direction from the ends of upright rock shafts 19, the latter being mounted in appropriate bearings 2O on the door 3. The rock shafts 19 are provided with other crank arms 21 at their centers, operating links 22 being pivoted to said crank arms at one end and their other ends to a hand lever 23.
Lever 23 is fulcrumed between its ends at 24 to an attaching plate 25 secured to the door in any suitable manner, the free end of said lever extending below its fulcruni as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. A locking plate 26 is pivoted at 27 to the lever 23 at a suitable point below its fulcrum, said plate having therein a '1 -shaped slot 28 into which a stud 29 projects from the plate 25.
When the lever 23 is shifted in one direction, the movement imparted to the rock shafts 19 will force the door 3 into binding frictional contact with the wall 1 and the locking plate 26 will then fall by gravity to receive the stud 29 in one of the laterally offset portions of the T-shaped slot 28, thereby locking the lever 23 against retrograde movement. To release said lever, however, it is simply necessary to raise plate 26 to position the central portion of the slot 28 in alinement with stud 29. Said lever may now be swung to the reverse position shown in Fig. 2 and will thus move thedoor'' out'- wardly from the side of the car, thus permitting said door to be opened or closed as the case may be. During this movement, the rollers 7 and 9 equally distribute the weight ofthe door upon both tracks 4 and "5 while the lrollers S prevent any possibility of the numerous carriages shifting yupwardly to such an extent as to pern'iitfthem ytojum'p their respective tracks."v
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, itwill be seen that I have produced a comparatively simple means for accomplishing the required results, yet that the same will be Vhighly efiicient and durable and will possess a number of advantageous characteristics. In conclusion, I will state that although certain speciiic details of construction have been shown and described for illustrative purposes, numerous changes may be made within the scope of theinvention as claimed without sacricing the main advantages thereof.
I claim:
l. In combination, a wall having therethrough a door opening, and a door for closing said opening, a sliding frame on which said door ismounted, means carried by said frame for forcing said door toward and away from the wall, a horizontally swinging hand lever fulcrumed between vits ends to the door for operating the aforesaid means, a locking plate pivoted to said lever and having a T-shaped slot, and a stud projecting outwardly'from the door into said slot, said stud being adapted for reception either ofthe laterally extending portions of said slot to lock the lever in reversed positions. 2. They combination with ay wall having therein a door opening and tracks above and below said openingg'offa pair of upper carriages mounted on the upper track, a pair of lower' carriages on the lower track, a 'pair of vrti'calbars spaced outwardly from the w'all a greater distance than the thickness of a door for the aforesaid opening, said bars having their ends extended rearwardly and secured to the upper and lower carriages and being spaced apart a distance less than the width of the door opening, upper and lower horizontal bars secured at their ends to said carriages, a door disposed between the vertical bars and the wall and of less height than the ldistance between the rearwardly bent ends of said vertical bars to allow said door to move nforwardly, and means supporting said Ydoor from certain of the aforesaid bars for permitting it to" move forwardly and rearwardly.
