To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, THoMAs C. BAM- FIELD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and GEORGE REGHTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to combs, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple, reliable and eflicient means for quickly cleaning the comb.

Another object of the invention i to provide a cleaning device connected to the comb to slide between the teeth and to thoroughly clean the same, said cleaner being connected to the back of the comb and provided with means for holding it in position when not required for use and for permitting the cleaner to be moved lengthwise of the teeth between the same for cleaning whenever required.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a comb which may be of the usual or any suitable type, and comprising the comb back 2 and the teeth 3 at one end of the comb and the finer teeth 4 at the opposite end thereof.

It will be obvious, however, that the cleaner may be applied to any form of comb whether of the single or double type, and whether the teeth are of the coarse or finer t e.

The cleaner comprises a strip of sheet metal of the proper thickness, or other sheet material of the required character, bent 1ongitudinally to form a U-shaped member in cros section. It will be obvious, however, that the cross sectional contour of the cleaner may be varied to conform to the cross sectional contour of the back and teeth of the comb. As shown in the drawing the cleaner comprises the two sides 7 and the connecting web 8, the latter being provided with a series of openings 9, which substantially conform to the size and shape of the teeth of the comb. At the opposite ends lugs 11 are formed on the cleaner, and extending through said lugs at each end and through the slots 6 in the end teeth are pins or rivets 12. Pivotally connected to each of the pins 12 1s a latch 13 having an angular finger 14 adapted to engage the upper edge of the back 2 of the comb for holding the cleaner in it uppermost position when not required for use. Extending from opposite sides near the center of the cleaner are lugs or finger holds 15.

The operation of the cleaner may be briefl described as follows: When it is desired to clean the comb, the fingers 14: and the latches 13 are thrown outward to the position shown at the left of Fig. 1, and by pushing down on the finger holds 15, the cleaner extends or is moved down with the pins 12 in the slot 6 to thoroughly clean the teeth of the comb. After the comb has been cleaned the cleaner is returned to its original position and the fingers 14 are turned back over the back 2 of the comb and is held in position until it is again required for use.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that a comb cleaner made in accordance with this invention can be manufactured at low cost, can be quickly operated for cleaning the comb, does not project materially from the comb nor interfere with its use and can be readily attached to a double or a single comb of various kinds and character.

Changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.

WVhat is claimed is The combination with a comb having end teeth provided with longitudinal slots extending upwardly into the back of the comb beyond the upper ends of the teeth, of a cleaner comprising an approximately U- shaped Or channeled body composed of narrow side flanges having terminal upwardly projecting ears and a connecting Web having openings for the teeth of the comb, pivots piercing the ears and carried by the same and located in the'upper extensions of the slots when the cleaner is at thelimit of its upward or inward movement, whereby accidental breakage of the slotted end teeth is preventedwhen thev cleaner is in its normal position, approximately L-shaped catches mounted on said pivots at one side of the comb and arranged to swing longitudinally of the comb into and out of engagement with the top edge thereof, and a air cit laterally extending finger lugs forme integral with the flanges and bent outwardly from the upper edges of the same.
