CAR-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, n.
Application filed. June 21, 1916. Serial No. 104,849.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK CHnIsTnN- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade, 1n
the State of Montana, have invented cerin car jacks and its object is to produce a device of this class that is simple in construction, positive and etlicient in operation and cheap to manufacture. With the foregolng and other objects in viewthe invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafer fully described in this specification, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part ofsaid specification and injWhich- F igure 1 is an edge elevation of an ordinary car wheel and its journal box, in section, showing the application of my improved car lack. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the adjustable base of the car jack.
Fig. 4. is a side elevation, partly in section, of a modified form of the device.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the support-,
ing spool used with the modified form of the device. j M
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the foot plates carried by the base of the ack.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My car jack comprises essentially a base formed of two adjustable metal straps 1, 2 each of which is formed with an elongated central slot 3 which slots receive the bolt 4c that adjustably connects the said straps. The strap 1 is provided with foot plates 5 adjustably secured thereto by bolts 6 and said foot plates are-formed with spurs 7 porting surface such as a railroad tie or the like as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawin gs. The strap 2 is formed at one end with an integral angular arm 8 which arm near its terminal is extended outwardly from the body portion of the strap to form aholdinghead 9.
Upon the strap 2 the screw 10, or a spool B carrying a pony screw 0, is secured by a sultable bolt passing through the slot 3 of that strap; the screw being provided with the usual head 11 formed with the apertures 12 through which the handle 18 may be passed andmanipulated to raise or lower the block 1% that directly engages the load. In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the jack is shown applied to the wheel and journal box of a railroad car. In use, when the car wheel 15 has a hot box my improved jack is placed beside the wheel with the strap 1 running transversely of the rail ties and the foot plates 5 directly engaging the ties. Since the straps 1,2 are relatively adjustable it is not necessary that the wheel should have its vertical center above a rail tie as the jack may be positioned between'the ties as well as directly over any one of the same. When the screw 10 (or 513001 B, Fig. 4'.) is so adjusted that the block 14 can be moved into engagement with the journal box 16 the handle 13 is so manipulated as to cause the said engagement, the holding-head 9 of arm 8 having been placed in engagement with the rim 17 of the wheel to anchor the same to the rail. The box 16 is now raised to per Init removal of the brasses 18, or other interior fittings, and new brasses may be inserted and the handle 13 may then be manipulated to lower the said box 16 again to normal position.
What is claimed is j T In a car jack, a longitudinally slotted strap, foot plates for said strap, a second strap secured to the slotted portion of said first named strap for transverse or rotary movement thereupon, said second strap being adapted to carry a lift screw, and an arm carried by said second strap and formed with a terminal head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atlixed my signature adapted to obtain a purchase upon a supin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK CHRISTENSEN.
