.Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. Woon a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Albans, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes,
- of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to an improved miter-box and has as its, primary object to provide a device of this character employ- 1 ing a saw guide adjustable for making miter cuts of various angles. and wherein the box propeiwof the device will also be adjustable for imparting obliquity to the miter cuts.
The invention has as a further object to provide a device of this character wherein the angle of themiter cut may be determinedwith accuracy and also wherein equal accuracy will be had in determining the inclination of. the ,bevel to be imparted to the miter cut.

As will nowbeseen, when the saw 49 is elevatedto inactive: position' uponthe posts 38, "the saw "baok- 50 will 'ride over the curved edges 45 of the pawls 41 to spring, theepawlsa-part'and permit the saw back to assume a position above the upper ends of the said pawls. Upon the assage of the saw back between the paw s, the springs 46 will then urge the pawls inwardly to engage the upper ends thereof or the shoulders 43 beneath the shoulders 51 of the saw back for automatically looking the saw in elevated position. To release the saw, the handle thereof is grasped and the saw shifted longitudinally until the notches 5:2 in the saw back 50 are,'as shown in Fig. 2, disposed above the upper ends of the pawls 41. The beveled bottom walls of the said notches will then engage between the beveled shoulders 44 of the said pawls to spring the pawls outwardly when the weight of the saw will then serve to release the pawls and permit the lowering of the saw upon the posts 38 to active position. I consequently provide an arrangement wherein, upon the movement of the saw to inactive position, the said saw will be automatically locked in such position and wherein the said saw can be released only by shifting the saw into a predetermined relation with respect to the posts 38. Consequently, the saw will not likely become accidentally released to drop and cause pos sible injury to the operator.
From the preceding description, it will now be understood that the saw guide may be shifted to adjust the saw with respect to the box proper for making miter cuts at various different angles while the said box may be rotated upon the base through the medium of the lever 18 for varying the obliquity of the said cuts. By consulting either of the scales 22, the oblique inclination of the cut may be accurately determined. Moreover, by employing a scale at each end of the adjacent supporting plate 12, one of the scales may be adjusted with reference to one end of the plate for positioning the adjacent side of the box proper to a predetermined angle when the angle then assumed by the opposite side of the said box will be indicated by the other scale. Accordingly, bevels of two different oblique angles may be out, according to which side of the box is employed to receive the work, at one adjustment of the box.
In some instances, it may be desired to make only cuts at right angles to the box and when it is intended to so use the device, I have provided auxiliary guide members 53 for the saw. These guide members are, as best shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, each triangular in general contour and are arranged within the notch 23 in the side 14 of the box proper farthest from the operator with the confronting edges of the members defining a slot as shown in Fig. 10 for receiving the saw. The guide members 53 are, upon the outer sides thereof, formed 7 with a plurality of lugs 54: while the sides 14 of the box proper are provided with similar lugs adapted to mate therewith for detachably receiving suitable pins 55 holding the guide members in position. Consequently, for the ordinary use of the device, these guide members may be easily displaced.
It will, therefore, be seen thatI provide a particularly efficient construction for the purpose set forth and an arrangement wherein miters of various angles may be out while, at the same time, said miters may be given an oblique direction which may be easily varied in degree.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described including a base, a box carried thereby, and a saw guide mounted upon the base, the said saw guide including a body member, upstanding posts carried thereby, sleeves slidable upon said posts and formed to operatively receive a saw, co-acting pawlscarried by the posts, and yieldable means bearing between the said awls and the posts and normally urging t e pawls to position for engagement with the back of asaw for I automatically locking the saw in inactive position upon the elevation thereof upon the posts.
2. A device of the character described including a base, a box mounted thereon, and a saw guide carried by the base, the said guide including a body member, upstanding posts mounted upon the body member, sleeves slidable upon the said posts, and pairs of coacting pawls carried by the said posts respectively with the pawls of each pair formed adjacent the upper extremities thereof with inwardly converging shoulders, the said sleeves being adapted to operatively receive a saw having a back providing lateral shoulders at opposite sides of the saw and formed at longitudinally spaced points with inwardly beveled notches with the saw movable with the said sleeves with respect to the posts to position the saw back above the upper ends of the pawls to be automatically engaged thereby with the said ends of the pawls coacting with the shoulders of the saw back for supporting the saw in inactive elevated position with respect to the box and with the saw movable with respect to the said sleeves for disposing the said notches to receive the beveled shoulders of the said saw back whereby the saw may be moved downwardly for spreading the pawls to disengage the saw back whereby the saw may be lowered to active position.
3.
