UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. ENGLEHARD, OF ESPY, PENNSYLVANIA.
MlTER-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,423, dated April 16, 1889. Application filed October 10, 1888 Serial No. 287,754. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM H. ENGLE- HARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Espy, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in miter-boxes; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a miter-box embodying my improvements. Fig.2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse central sectional view of the same. Fig. l is a perspective view of the miter-box having the bevel-plates adjusted thereon. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line a: m of Fig. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a portion of the device to illustrate the manner of connecting the guides to the lever. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the cam-lever.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the angle-box, comprising the base a and the vertical side a, which is provided at its center with a vertical opening, a and B B designate suitable standards or legs which are secured to the under side of the base to support the same a short distance above the bench or table upon which the device stands.
On an ear, 0, which projects a short distance beyond the rear side of the box, is pivoted the adjusting-lever G, and the free end of the lever bears on a semicircular guide, D, which is arranged slightly below the lower side of the base a. This guide is attached at its ends to a casting, E, which is aiiixed to the under side of the base a, and the ear 0 also forms a part of the said casting.
The guide D is provided with a longitudinal slot, cl, in which the adjusting-bolts F F are arranged, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained, and D represents a strengthening or stifiening rib at the inner edge of the guide.
G G represent arched sawguides having lateral strengthening or stiffening ribs 9 g, and provided at their rear ends with the horizontal extensions G G. These extensions are provided on their lower sides with transverse ribs g g, which fit in a transverse groove, 9 in the heel of the lever, and h h represent apertures in the said extensions which align with transverse slots h in the heel of the lever. Bolts H H engage the said slots an d apertures and secure the rear ends of the jaws at any desired distance apart to suit the set of the saw which is to be passed between them.
The saw-guidescurve forward and over the front side of the base, and to their extremities is aflixed the clamp 1, consisting of the vertical arms K K, provided with longitudinal slots 76 k, which are engaged by set-screws k k on the guides. The upper ends of the said arms are connected by the adj ustingbolt L,which passes transversely t-herethrough, and the set-screws M M, which are arranged, respectively, above and below the adjustingbolt, pass through threaded apertures m m in one of the arms and bear at their ends against the other arm.
To open or close the saw-guides, loosen or tighten the adj usting-bolt and arrange the setscrews to bear firmly against the side of the arm, thereby locking the arms against further movement. The slots in the arms K enable the latter to be adjusted vertically to allow any desired inclination of the saw, and the arms are clamped in the desired position by tightening the set-screws k it.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that to arrange the saw-guides at any desired angle it is only necessary toswing the free end of the adjustingdever toward one end of the box or the other, and to lock the lever in this position I provide it at its free end on the under side with the cam-lever N. This cam-lever bears against the outer edge of the guide D, and is provided with a horizontal lip, a, which extends under the guide when the latter is in its operative position and holds the adj listing-lever firmly against its upper side. When it is desired to make a square cut, the lever is arranged at the center of the slotted guide, and the adjustingbolts F F are placed on opposite sides thereof and tightened, thereby guarding against accidental displacement. A false bottom, 0, is affixed on the upper side of the base a to re ceive the cuts, which are unavoidable in the use of a miter-box, and it is provided near its ends with the transverse slots P P, having enlargements p p at their front ends.
Q Q designate bevel-plates, having apertures q g at their lower edges, which register with the slots in the false bottom, and R R represent adjusting-bolts, which pass through the said apertures and engage the slots in the bottom to enable the said plates to be arranged in the desired position. The inner ends of the said plates are beveled and mi tered, and the said ends are designed to be aligned with the opening a in the side of the box.
The molding or strip to be matched or mitered is placed against .the plate in the ordinary way, as will be understood.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with the miter-box, of the lever mounted thereon and provided with suitable looking devices, the arched sawguides'affixed at their rear ends to the heel of the lever, and the clamp comprising the arms aflixed to the front ends of the said guides and connected by an adjusting-bolt, L, whereby the extremities of the guides may be relatively adjusted, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the miter-box, of the lever mounted thereon and provided with suitable locking devices, the arched sawguides afiixed to the heel of the lever and provided at their extremities with the setscrews It It, the vertical slotted arms K K, mounted on the said set-screws, the adj 11sting-bolt L, connecting the upper ends of the arms, and the set-screws M M, engaging transverse apertures in the upper end of one of the arms and bearing against the other arm, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the miter-box, of the lever mounted thereon and provided with suitable locking devices, the arched sawguides provided at their rear ends with apertures h h, which register with transverse slots in the heel of the said lever, the adjustingbolts H H, engaging the apertures and the slot, and the clamp I, connecting the free extremities ofthe guides, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the miter-box, of the lever mounted thereon and provided at its heel with the transverse groove 9 and the transverse slot h, the saw-guides provided at their rear ends with the ribs g g, fitting in the groove g and the apertures h h, registering with the slot h, the adjusting-bolts H H, engaging the registering slot and apertures, and the clamp connecting the free ends of the said guides and comprising the arms K K, atfixed, respectively, to the guides and connected by an adjusting-bolt, L, whereby they are relatively adjustable, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the miter-box, of the semicircular guide arranged under the base-plate thereof, the lever C, mounted onthe box and bearing at its free end on the said guide, the cam-lever mounted on the said lever and provided with a lip, 12, engaging under the semicircular guide, and the arched saw-guides affixed to the heel of the lever C, substantially as specified.
6. The combination, with the miter-box, of the semicircular slotted guide D, the lever O, mounted on the box and provided with the arched sawguides G G, the cam-lever N, mounted on the lever G and adapted to engage the guide D, and the adjusting-bolts F F, arranged in the slot of the guide D and adapted to be adjusted on opposite sides of the lever O, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 1
. 7. The combination, with the miter-box having its bottom provided with transverse slots P P, and the lever C, mounted on the box and provided with the saw-guides G, of the bevelplates Q Q, provided at their lower edges with apertures q q, adapted to register with the slots P P, and the adjustingbolts R R, en-' gaging the registering apertures and slots to clamp the said plates in the desired position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. ENGLEHARD.
