. S PATEN IO DELAMAR C. BRIGGS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DETROIT STEEL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE FOR METALLIC-WINDOW VENTILATORS.
Application filed April 24, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELAMAR C. BRIGGS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinges for Metallic-Window Ventilators, of which the following is a specification, reference being: had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to metallic window construction and has particular reference to the means for pivotally supporting the swinging sash sections or ventilators. In the practical manufacture of metallic windows the degree of accuracy in workmanship is not sufiicient to permit of assembling the parts without adjustment. Or, in case of greater accuracy, greater skill is required on the part of the workman, which increases the cost of construction. Thus in the placing of the sash pivots or hinges, if the 00- operating members thereof are first secured to the stationary and swinging sash sections, they frequently will not, register so as to permit the proper closing of the sash.
WVith the present construction, the difliculty is avoided in a very simple and inexpensive way, by a construction of hinge provided with an adjustment between the securing portion and the pivot eye thereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the adjacent side bars of the stationary and swinging sash sections showing my improved hinge connection therebetween; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section; Fig. 3 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hinged parts detached.
A and B are the adjacent bars of the swinging and stationary sash sections which, as shown, are in the form of T-bars provided with molded heads 0 and parallel stem portions D.
My improved hinge comprises a member E which is attached to one of said bars, as for instance the bar B, the pivot member F, and the eye and shank member G. The member E is formed with a plate portion E which lies adjacent to the stem portion D of the bar B, being secured thereto by screws or rivets H. Projecting from this portion E are a series of parallel lugs or cars E which extend within the space between the Specification of Letters Patent.

bars and are apertured at E in alinement with each other. The member F is in the form of a shoulder pin having the pivot portion F, the collar F 2 and the securing shank F The shank F engages an aperture in the stem D of the bar A and is secured, preferably by riveting, as indicated at I, the shoulder F 2 being drawn against said stem. The pin portion F engages an .eye G at the upper end of the member G,
and is provided with a head J, preferably formed by riveting over the end portion thereof. The member G is further provided with a shank portion G which is adapted to fit in the alined apertures of two of the lugs E while an adjustable screw K engages a threaded aperture in the remaining lug and extends in alinement with the shank G l/Vith the construction as described, in mounting the window sash, the position of the pivot may be raised or lowered by adj ustment of the screw K which bears against the end of the shank G and will move the latter up or down in the lugs E This will permit of punching the holes for the rivets H and I without necessity of great accuracy,
while the range of adjustment permitted is sufficient to properly position the swinging sash.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a metallic window, the combination with adjacent bars of stationary and swinging sash sections, of a hinge fitting, comprising a pivot member secured to one of said bars and projecting laterally therefrom, a member secured to the other of said bars anda pivot-eye section adjustably secured to said member.
2. In a metallic window, the combination with adjacent bars of stationary and swinging sash sections, of a hinge comprising a pivot member secured to and projecting laterally from one of said bars, a member secured to the other of said bars having a series of laterally-projecting ears provided with alined apertures therein, an eve member engaging said pivot and provided with a shank engaging said apertured ears, and adjusting means for raising and lowering said shank in said ears.
3. In a metallic window, the combination with adjacent parallel bars of stationary and swinging sash sections, of a pivot member secured to and projectinglaterallylfrom one of said bars, a member secured to the other of said bars provided With a plurality of laterally-projecting ears having alined apertures therein, an eye member engaging said pivot and provided with a downwardly extending shank engaging" the apertures in the upper ear I- members, and an adjusting;
aSli Sections, f pivot member secured to and projecti'ng Iaterally from one'of'said bars, an eye member carried by" the other bar and engaging said pi ot,.and means foradjusting the eye mem- In a metallic Window, the combination with adjacentbars of stationary and swinging sash-sections, of a member secured to one of said bars havinga lurality of laterally-projecting" ears," an 'e ongated' member passing slidably through said ears and.
orming a pivotal support for the other bar, and meansfor adjusting the elongated member longitudinally. V I a V In testimony whereof I aflix my signature inp'resence oftwo'witnesses,
