HENRY KNIGHT, 0F TUNBRIDGE WELLS, ENG-LAND.
DEVICE FOR MAKING GIGABETTES.
Application filed May 5, 1914.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY KNIGHT, a subject of His Majesty the King of England, residing at Beausite, Boyne Park, Tunbridge Wells, in the county of Kent, Kingdom of England, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Making Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cigarette formers. According to this invention a tobacco-holding cover is made to slide over the concaved side of a tobacco-holding trough by means of grooved, or bent, or turned edges. The cover and trough may have one end closed by either having the end bent inwards or by attaching a button. 7 The cover can have an indentation or rivet and the like to act as a stop so that the trough cannot be pulled away, or separated from the cover; or if desired the cover at the open end can be made wider and the edges joined to form a stop for the band to come in contact with. A ring or band and the like can be attached to the trough in such a manner that it slides over cover and can come in contact with the indentation, or rivet, or junction and the like of the cover, so that the cover and the trough are prevented from being separated.
The objects of my improvements are to provide a tobacco-holding trough and a tobacco-holding cover which are combined in such a manner that they can not be separated, and that when tobacco is placed between the trough and cover, the tobacco will not exude from between the edges of the trough and the cover, and therefore does not require trimming; that the parts will. not twist or rotate although they are not hinged together; that a plunger is not required; and finally that the cigarette when com pletely formed can be pulled or pushed out of the cover.
The attached drawings illustrate some of the preferred methods of applying the invention, and in these :Figure 1 illustrates a closed cigarette former; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows the trough and gives a view of the stop and the rivet showing how the band is riveted or soldered to the trough. Fig. 4 is a view of the cigarette former open, and ready to re ceive the tobacco between the trough and the cover at the open end of cover marked H;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 36, 1915.
Serial No. 836,521.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the trough with the end bent over to form a band, instead of having a separate band aifixed to the trough; Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of the cover with the end joined to form a stop; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional view, on line 7-7 of Fig. 5.
In the drawings the letter A indicates the cover, a a rivet, stop or indentation, B the trough, C the sliding-band or ring attached to the said trough, c a band made with the same material as the trough, D a wire handle, E a stop, or end of the trough bent up, F a rivet to affix the band to the trough, and J a stop or end of the cover.
The cover A, and the trough B, constitute the cigarette former. There is a rivet or indentation a, in the cover A, to prevent the two parts from separating, and the trough is provided with a stop E, or the end may be turned up to come in contact with the rivet or indentation a, in the cover A, to prevent the two parts from separating; or alternatively the rivet or indentation may protrude outwardly and come in contact with the sliding band, or instead of the indentation the cover may be oined at the open end as shown at G in Fig. 6, when the slidingband will come in contact with the said junction G.
The cigarette is formed in the following manner :The trough is extended as shown in Fig. 4, and the action of pressing tobacco between trough and the cover, toward the stopped or cover end of the trough, gradually fills and closes the device, the paper is now wound round the closed device and secured, and the cigarette paper is filled by holding the slide band with the thumb and finger of one hand, and pulling cover out of cigarette by means of the wire handle D, until the indentation a comes in contact with the stop E, when the completed cigarette is pulled from trough B.
The cigarette former may be made with any stiff material, such as thin metal and the like.
Figs. 3, 5, and 6, show the parts separated from their componets, but Figs. 5, and 6. or 3, and 6, can be joined together to make a complete device as in Figs. 1, and 4; for instance if the trough B, Fig. 5 is put into the cover A,'Fig. 6, the long body part of trough B would go inside the cover A, and the band part a, of the trough B,
would go on the outside of the cover A, as in Figs. 1 and 4. In Fig. 6, the cover is on its side to show the bottom view.
I claim- 1. A device for making cigarettes comprising a tubular cover portion having one closed end, and a trough slidable in said cover portion and having a closing abutment at one end engaging within said cover, and held from removal therefrom, the'parts arranged as and for the purpose described.
2. A device for making cigarettes comprising a tubular cover portion having a longitudinal opening in its periphery, the said cover having one closed end, and a trough slidable in said cover portion and closing the said opening, the said trough having a closing abutment at one end, the cover having a stop adjacent its open end adapted to be engaged by the closing abutment of the trough whereby the said trough is held from removal from the cover, the parts arranged as and for the purpose described.
3. A device for making cigarettes comprising a tubular cover portion having a longitudinal opening in its periphery, said cover portion having one end closed, a trough slidable in said cover portion and closing the longitudinal opening therein, the
said trough having a ring shaped abutment at one end encircling the outer periphery of the cover portion, and means cooperating with the abutment whereby the trough is held from removal from the cover, the parts arranged as and for the purpose described.
4. A device for making cigarettes comprising a tubular cover portion having a longitudinal opening in its periphery, the said cover portion having one end'closed, and a handle carried by the said cover portion adjacent the closed end, a trough slidable in said cover portion and closing the longitudinal opening therein, the said trough having a ring shaped abutment at one end surrounding the outer periphery of the cover portion and providing means for holding the trough as the cover is slid therefrom by means of the handle carried thereby, and means cooperating with said ring shaped abutment whereby the trough is held from removal from the cover.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. HENRY KNIGHT.
