To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN TAUSAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gordon, in the county of Sheridan and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sickle- Bar-Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a sickle-bar holding device.

My object is to supply a device for holding and supporting a sickle-bar during the process of sharpening the sections thereof, a device that will take the weight of the sickle-bar from the arms of the operator and also a device that is mobile and will not hamper the free turning of the sickle sections on the surface of the grind stone at the will of the operator.

In the drawings herewith which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. '2 is a plan view of the bottom of the square frame and connecting member.

Referring to the drawings in detail an ordinary type of grindstone frame 1, hav ing a grind stone 2 mounted thereon is used in connection with my invention, the supporting arm of which is of iron pipe; An upright member 4: having a slot 7 adjacent the upper end thereof is secured to the grind stone frame in any preferred manner. Telescopically connected with the member 4 is a second member 5 having a plurality of threaded apertures adjacent the lower end thereof, into one of said apertures a set screw 7 is fitted through the slot 7 which permits a partial rotation of the member 5 within the member 4: and the plurality of the apertures permits of vertical adjustment. The upper end of the member 5 is bent at right angles and is of sufficient length to extend over the axis of the grind stone, having a slot 6 adjacent the end thereof.

A bifurcated member 8 is telescopically mounted in the end of the member 5, having a plurality of threaded apertures adjacent the end thereof, and is secured in position by a set screw 6 entered into one of the threaded apertures through the slot 6 which Specification of Letters Patent.

permits of a partial rotation of the bifurcated member 8 within the member 5, and also provides means for lateral adjustment with the member 5. Each prong of the member 8 is provided with apertures adjacent the ends of the prongs.

A supporting frame comprising a square open box or frame having a brace 10 eX- tending from side to side located below the center line thereof, said brace being of the same dimensions as the sides of said frame and a plurality of rods 11, 12 and 13 secured to the sides of said frame, said rods extending laterally from the sides of the said frame, and are secured thereto by having their ends screw-threaded and passed through apertures in the said sides of the said frame first having a nut 1% run on the end of the rod to serve as a jam-nut. The end of the rod is then inserted in the aperture in'the side of the frame and being secured in position with a second screwthreaded nut 15, which is run on the end of the bar and tightly screwed against the side of the frame which has been closely pressed against the said jam-nut 14:. A spacing bar 16 having apertures corresponding to those in the side of the frame, is mounted on the ends of the said bars in the same manner as the bars are attached to the said frame. The bottom bar 17 of the frame and the centrally located brace 10 are provided with apertures in their central portions. The bifurcated member 8 is attached to the said frame, one prong resting on the brace 10 of the frame and the lower cross piece 17 of the frame resting on the other prong the apertures in the frame and the prongs being made to register and a bolt 18 is passed therethrough forming a swivel joint which permits the frame to partially rotate on the member 8. On the lower rods 13, grooved traveler pulleys 19 are mounted, said pulleys supporting spiral springs 20 which terminate in an enlarged portion 21 adapted to receive and support the end of a sickle bar 22.

In operation the sickle-bar is placed in the enlarged portion of the springs which support the sickle-bar just above the surface of the grind stone. It carries the weight of the sickle-bar permitting the operator to manipulate it at will without having to bear the weight thereof. The various joints and the resilience of the springs permitting of maneuvering the sickle-bar as becomes necessary when grinding the varying angles of a sickle section.

l/Vhat I claim and Wish to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In combination With a grind stone and the frame thereof, of a telescopically and adjustably jointed supporting arm; a frame pivotedly mounted on said arms; traveler pulleys mounted on said frame and resilient springs attached to said pulleys, whereby a sickle-bar maybe suspended above the surface of the said grind stone.
