SHOE RECEP'I'AGI'IE AND PROTECTOR Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915'.
Application filed April 1a, 1914. we no. 832,772,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOSHUA B. MrrcHnLL,
citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of-Henrico and State; of Virginiahe e invented certain. new
and useful mprovements in Shoe Recep tacles and Protectors, of which the followtion of one form of the invention.
ing is a specification. I
This invention relates to receptacles for packing and storing articles and has special reference to a receptacle for packing shoes so that the latter may be placed in contact with other articles without danger of soiling the other articles.
The principal object of the invention 15 to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention 1s the provision of means for holding the shoe in the receptacle after the same has been placed therein.
A third object of the invention is the provision of means to permit the expansion of the receptacle so that the latter may be used to accommodate shoes of different sizes while at the same time fitting snugly around said shoes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in eneral of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a side eleva- Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a sec tion on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of, a modified form of the in vention. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1 showing the modified device. Fig. 6 is a similar section showing a second modification.
In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a sole 1 to which is attached an upper portion 2, the sole being connected to the upper portion by an accordion plaited portion 3. It is preferred that the upper portion 2 be made of a single piece of material properly stretched and shaped and the rear edges of this piece of material are sewed together as at 4, the line of stitching terminating at 5, midway of the height of the heel portion of the shoe.
Above this, line of stitching 4: there is provided, in the form shown in Fig. 1, a flap 6 which overlaps a similar flap on they opposed rear portion and is connected thereto by means of suitable fasteners 7 of the glove fastener type preferably.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 there is provided in place of the flap 6 a substantially triangular flap 9 which laps around to the side of the upper portion 2 and on the same side of the 11 per as the flap 9 there is provided a to ap 10 whereto is connected one member 0 a fastener 11, the other member being carried on the upper portion 2. It is also to be noted that the member 9 is provided with a suitable opening to fit over the portion of the fastener carried by the upper 2. Thus. when the member 11 is assembled the member 9 is held in position as well as the flap 10.
In the form shown in Fig. 1 the top is left open for purposes of ventilation while in the form shown in Fig. 4 the top is closed.
It will be seen from Fig. 3 that shoes of varying widths may be inserted in the devlce by opening the rear thereof, the accordion plaited portion 3 permitting both lateral and vertical expansion. The rear may then be fastened up and hold the shoe securely in the container.
At each end of the sole 1 there is provided a handle strap or hanger 8.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 there is provided a sole member 1 and upper members 2 which are connected by a line of stitching 3', the upper members being connected to thesole member by a seam on each side as at In the form shown in Fig. 6 two, members 2" are provided, which connect to form a sole and an upper portion, the upper portion being sewed together along the median line as indicated at 3 while the sole portion is sewed together along the median line as indicated at 4".
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the kind described, a sole portion adapted to conform to the upper of a shoe, an upper portion and connected to the sole portion by accordion plaits, said upper portion being open at the back from the top down through a portion of its height, and means to hold said open portion reelasably closed, the opening at the back afiording means for introduction of the shoe Without folding.
2. In a device of the kind described, a solememeo ward from the first side of theupper portion and adapted to lap over the first flap, and means to hold said flap and upper por tion together, the opening at the back afiording means for introduction of the shoe with-- out folding.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSHUA B. MITCHELL.
