` M. WHITE HAND BAG Filed May 1, 1924 Patented Aug. 4, 1925.
UNITED STATES MORRIS WHrTE, or New YORK, N. Y.
HAND BAG.
Application filed May 1,
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Bags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bags, particularly those adapted for ladies use, such as handbags, pocketbooks, and under-the-arm bags, its object being to provide suoli bags with an attachment including a mirror and a iap on one of its exterior faces so as to allow an inspection of the face and headdress without opening up the bag, as is required with bags now in use.
Some of the purposes of this invention are the provision of a mirror which is easily accessible without Opening the bag, and the provision of a protective element to cover the mirror when the mirror is not in use, the arrangement being such that the protective element will swing by gravity out of the line of vision in the mirror, when the fastening member holding the protective element or flap in protective relation to the mirror is open.
Another purpose is the provision of a pocket on the inner face of the protective Hap so arranged that when the flap is down or in open position, the Opening into said pocket is from above, the relation of bag, mirror, protective flap, and pocket in said flap being such that at no time can anything drop out of said pocket unless the bag be turned upside down. Other purposes will become apparent on reading the appended description.
An exemplary embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawings, where- 111:-
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a ladys bag provided with the protective flap in open position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional end view of the same in closed position.
As illustrated in the drawings, 1 repre sents a ladys bag having a central compartment 2 on which are held the jaws 3 and 4C connected with each other by hinge joints 5 in the usual manner. On the top of the jaw 3 is a suitable lock 6 adapted to lock the jaws in place, so as to hold the compartment 2 closed.
Adjacent the jaws 3 and 11 are compart- 1924. SeraI No. 710,261.
ments 7 and 8. Secured to or integral with the rear side 9 of the ladys bag 1 is a flap 10 adapted to cover the compartments 7 and 8 and the jaws 3 and 4c, respectively. Fla-p 10 is provided adjacent its free end with a snap fastener 13 which is adapted to be held by a snap socket, not shown, secured to the side 15 of the bag 1. A pocket is generally provided on the inner face of the rear side 9 of the bag for the reception of a small, flat purse or other suit-able article 9a; and another pocket 9b is provided on the Outer rear side of the bag between the two rear sides 9 and 16, the side 16 not extending to the top of the bag in order to provide easy access to said pocket.
A support 18, preferably a suitable piece Of cloth, is sewed to the outer face of the exterior portion 16, although, if desired, it may be adhesively attached, but sewing is preferable. The edges of the mirror 2O may be suitably covered if desired, as by a thin leather binder 19, and this binder may cover as much of the rear surface as is desired, for ornamental purposes. The mirror is then adhesively attached to the support 18, preferably by adhesively attaching thereto a sheet of somewhat porous tough paper 19, which is then adhesively attached to the support 18. A flap 21 is attached, pref erably by sewing, to the outer face of the side 16 of the bag before the mirror is applied to the bag, and the fiap is in such position that the lower edge of the mirror will overlap and be outside of the stitching, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This flap 21 is stiffened, except at the part adj acent the mirror where it is flexible, so that it may be folded up over the mirror and securely held in place to protect the same by a snap fastener 23 co-operating with the socket 24, or by other suitable means. A piece of material 21a is stitched as at 21b and 21c to provide a pocket 21d, in which may be carried various devices for cO-Operation with the mirror, such as ladies powder boxes, lip sticks, etc., but some of these may, if desired, be carried within the pocket 9".
A cord 11 passes around the bend of the flap 10 and is held in place by suitably dimensioning the cord, and such cord may, if desired, have an ornamental extension 12.
The particular exemplication of my invention illustrated and described is known as an under-the-arm bag, and is generally carried by passing the hand between the outer or upper side of the flap 10 and the cord 11, the palm of the hand resting more or less against the front of the bag and the lingers bein bent down somewhat over the rear side. y so carrying the bag it can be held in an upright position before the face, and the fastening device 23, 24 opened, whereupon the flap 2l will fall down of its own weight out of the line of vision in the mirror, at the same time exposing the-pocket 21d in upright position.
It is of course understood that my inven- Vtion is not limited to the exact bag illustrated, whiclris my preferred embodiment ofthe invention, and that various changes maybe made within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having described my invention, what I 'desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: having a mirror attached l. A handbag to an outer'face thereof, a iap hingedly secured' adjacent the lower edge of the mirror, and a sheet of material attached to the face of the flap adjacent the mirror forming a pocket opening upwardly when the flap isdown..
2. A bagv comprising sides and containing pockets therebetween, one of said sides having an extension thereon forming a flap to close the bag, co-operatmg fastening means on the .outer surface of another side and adjacent the end of said flap, a cord fitting about that part of the flap which is uppermo'st when in closed position, a mirror on the exterior of ythe other side of the bag not covered by-- the flap when in closed position, asti iapshaving a flexible portion attached tothe bag under the edge ofthel mirror. y
,3. .Abag comprising sides and containing pockets therebetween, one of said sides -havingan extension thereon forming' a flap to close the bag, co-operating fastening means lpockets therebetween, one of said sides hav-' ing an extension thereon forming a ap to close the bag, co-operating fastening means on the outer surface of another side and adjacent the end of said flap, a cord fitting;
about that part of the Hap which is uppermost when in closedposition, a mirror on' I the exterior of the other side of thebag not covered by the flap when in closed position, a sti flap having a flexible portion attached to thebag under the lower edge of themirror between said mirror and the face ofthe bag, and means to hold said last mentioned flap in closed position. l K j 5. A-bag comprising sides and containing pockets therebetween, one of said sides hav- 1 ing an extension thereon forming-a,- flap' to i close the bag, co-operating fasteningmeans j on the outer surface of another side and: adjacent the endjof said iap', a cord-fitting about that part of the .flapI which is uppermost when in closed position, a mirror on the exterior of theI other side of the bag notv covered by the flap when in closed position, a stiff flap having a flexible portion attached to the bag 'under the edge of the mirror,
said last mentionedflap having a pocket therein opening upwardly when the flap is' open, and means to hold said last mentioned `flap in closed position.
