IMPROVEMENT IN SIEVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 113,184, dated March 28, 1871.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MANN, of

- Dallas City, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain lmprovements in Sieves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, .and in which- Figurel is a central vertical section of the annular band or sieve-body made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the sieve-bottom detached. Fig; 3 is a central vertical section of the band and bottom in position together.

Like letters of reference made use of in the several figures indicate like parts.

My invention relates to that class of sieves ordinarily used for household or domestic puri poses, made of an annular band, with a bottom of wire netting, and it particularly relates to those made with ametallic band instead of the old original style of bent wooden band; and my invention consists in a novel construction and separation of the band and the netting, or bottom, whereby the sieve is made adjustable to nettings of various degrees of neness of mesh, so that with one sievefbody there may be several different bottoms, which may be changed at will, as it is desired to sift ine or coarse articles.

To enable those skilled in the art to make 'and use my invention,I will proceed to debody of the sieve. This band is turned inward 'and upward at the bottom, as at a, so as to form a groove around the inner bottom edge of said band.

B is a smaller metallic band, consisting of a double or bent plate, between the pliesof i which is inserted the edge of the wire netting C, indicated by the dotted lines. is secured in place and firmly held by swaging the metal of the band B against it.

The sieve-bottom, consisting of the netting extended by the band B, may be inserted in the band A by placing it within the top and pressing it down until the lower edge of the band B rests in the groove at bottom of the band A, and may be readily removed and replaced 'by another. 'K

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The metallic sieve-band A, with upturned bottom edge a., to receive a removable sievebottom, substantially as and for the purpose specied.

2. The combination of the sieve-band A and removable bottom B C, substantially as specied and shown.
