Description

No. 13^s,754 Patenten@ 1, 1.872.
PATENT OFFICE.
EOEEET J. MANN, OE BURLINGTON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC SIEVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,764, dated October 1, 1872.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MANN, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in Metallic Sieves, of which the following is a speoication:
lNature of the Intention.
This invention relates to a novel manner of securing the sieve-cloth to the metallic sides or body; and the invention consists iu applying to the netting or sieve-cloth a stout wire ring, over which the edges of the netting are folded or rolled and stretched taut, and in securing the ring and its attached netting to the sieve body by placing it within a fold upturned at the bottom of the body, and clasping the metal thereof upon it, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a sieve embodying this invention, and Fig. 2 is a view of the bottom of such sieve.
Like letters of reference made use of in the 'several figures denote like parts.
To enable those skilled in the artto make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, makin g use in so doing of the aforesaid drawing by letters of reference thereto.
General Description.
otherwise fastened, although this is not absolutely necessary. The netting being cut to a circular shape is placed upon and secured to this ring by bending the ends of the wires of the cloth around the ring sufficiently, so that the cloth will bear a moderate strain and retain the raw edges of the cloth. This ring bearing the netting is placed within a gutter, a, formed by upturning the lower edge of the sieve body, and clamped therein by any appropriate means, forcing the sides of the gutter together above the ring, and thus at one operation securing the netting to the body, while the wire-cloth having been previously strained over the ring c, does not require any swaging to subsequently tighten it.
The special advantages of this construction are the additional stiffness and strength the wire-ring gives to this portion of the body; the ease with which the netting is applied; and the fact that by the use of this stout wire ring the ordinary braces or wires placed across the netting from the sides in two directions may be dispensed with.
Having thus fully described lthe construe tion and operation of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic sieve, made with the wire-cloth B strained over a stout annular wire hoop or rin g, C, which is inserted in the gutter a of the metallic sides A, which inclose and clasp the cloth and ring, as and for the purpose specified.
ROBERT J. MANN.
