GAS-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915.
Application filed July 9, 1914. Serial No. 849,927.
0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. STARR, of No. 116 Point street, Providence, in'the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-nuinerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to gas stoves and has for its object to provide means for protecting the operating handles of the valves or cocks by means of which the supply of gas to the various burners is con trolled, so that accidental opening or closing of the valves by contact with the operators clothing or other objects may be prevented.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully explained, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view showing in top plan an end portion of a gas stove. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the stove top and'the valve handles, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 83 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
My inv'ention comprehends arranging in conjunction with a gas stove, of the usual or any preferred construction, a ledge or portion which may be in the form of a shelf preferably forming an extension of the stove top which is provided with an aperture or apertures in which the handles of the valves controlling the supply of gas to the various burners are located to the end that these may be protected against accidental movement. In illustrating my invention I have shown a portion of a gas stove comprising a body 1, beneath the top of which is arranged one or more of the usual top burners, two of these being shown in the present instance, the forward one being indicated at 2 and the rear burner by 8. These burners are supplied with intake tubes 4 and 5 leading to the front of the stove body where they are positioned in alinement with the valves 6 and 7 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, which receive gas from the gas main or supply pipe 8. On the front of the stove body isprovided a horizontally projecting extension or shelf 9 which preferably comprises enlarged over hanging front edge'of the plate forming the top of the stove. This protecting projection is provided with an aperture or recess at a point above the valves 6 and 7 which is of suflicient size to accommodate the valve handles 6 and 7 and also affords space in which the operators fingers may be inserted to grip and manipulate said valve handles. The latter are also located beneath the horizontal top surface of the flange 9 so that they will not interfere with the placing or removing of cooking vessels from the top of the stove.
:I deem it desirable to form the aperture in the projecting portion of the stove or stove top in the form of an oval as shown in Fig. 3, with a cup shaped bottom, formed either by casting said bottom integrally with the shelf 9 or by making it a separate casting as this bottom however made. serves to deflect the upwardly moving heated currents of air so that the valve handles do not become over heated. In practice I have found that by thus protecting the handles these may be made of metal in lieu of wood or someother form of construction required to permit them to be comfortably operated;
In carrying out this feature of my invention I preferably provide a cup shaped or recessed casting, as indicated by 10, which fits within the aperture of the shelf or projecting portion 9 and which is held in place by lugs 11, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In order to permit the casting 10 to be removed when it is desired to dust out or clean off any foreign: substance I provide the bottom with an opening 12 which has the same contour as the valve handle and is of suificient size to permit the latter to pass therethrough. .The opening 12 is preferably arranged in such position as to lie directly beneath the handle of the valve when the latter is closed; as shown in Fig. 2.
I also deem it desirable to provide on the forward edge of the recessed member or cup 10, indicating words such as On and Off which cooperate with the finger or pointer such as 6 on the valve handle to indicate the open and closed positions of the valves. In order that the valve may be seourely locked in a closed position and prevented from being rotated except by a conscious act on the part of the operator, I provide a projection 10 behind which the finger or pointer6 e'ngages in its normal closed or ofi' position. Disengagement between these interlocking projections is accomplished by tilting the valve handle as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
I claim as my invention' 1. In a gas stove, the combination with the usual burners; a source of gas supply thereforcomprising a valve and 'a top' portionfor the stove having a forwardly projecting edge provided with an aperture; of ahandle for perating the valvelocated in said aperture of the stove top.
2. In a gas stove, thecombination with a stove body having the usual burners, a portionprojecting' beyond the body of the stove and provided with a recess, and the usual gas supply pipes comprising a valve'locate'd beneath'said projecting portion of thestove, of a valve operating handle locatedin the recess of the projecting'portionbeneath the upper surface thereof.
- 3. In a gas stove, the combination with the usual burners, a source ofgas supply therefor comprising a valve and a "top portion for the stove having a forwardly projecting edge provided with an aperture; "of a cup shaped piece rem'ovably' supported in said aperture'an'd' provided with an opening in its bottom, a valve stem extending through said openingand a valve handle secured to the stem and located in said cup piece. Y 4c. In a gas stove, the combination with the usual burners, a source of gas supply there for comprising a valve and a top portion Copies of this patent may be obtained for for the stove having a forwardly projecting edge provided with an aperture, located above said valve, of an upwardly extending valve stem, a handle pivoted thereon beneath the level of the stove top and a projection disposed within said aperture and cooperating with the valve handle to lock it in the turned off position.
5. In a gas stove, the combination with the usual burners, a source of gas supply therefor comprising a valve and a top portion for the stove having a forwardly projecting edge provided with an aperture, of a cup shaped pieceremovably supported in said aperture, and a valve handle for'opeiating the valve located in said cup piece, the latter being provided with an aperture ci ia size adapted topermit the handle to be passed through the bottom of the cup piece QQInLa gas stove, the'combination with the usual burners, a source of gas supply thereforeomprising a valve and a topportion for the stove having a forwardly projecting edge provided with an aperture located abovesaid valve, of an upwardly extending valve stem, a handle pivoted thereon be neaththe level of the stove top, a cup shaped member located in the aperture of the stove rep and provided with an'inwardly'ezgtendin'g projection adapted to cooper'ate'with said handle to hold it in closed position, said member being also provided with an opening in its bottom located beneath the handle when in its clo'sedposition and of a size to perinitthe latter to be passed therethrough.
