Description

A; NICHOLSON. DEVICE FOR TOPPING KAPIR CORN.
APPLICATION FILEDAUG. 3, 1914.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
wmmw I ALBERT NICHOLSON, F NEAL, KANSAS.
DEVICE FOR 'lOIli'lPIhl'G KAFIR CORN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 3, 1914. Serial No. 854,828.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I. ALBERT NICHOLSON,
' acitizen of the United States, residing at Neal, in the county of Greenwood and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Top ping Kafir Corn; and I do hereby declare .the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to'new and useful improvements in devices for'topping Kafir .corn' and consists essentially in the provision of a simpleand eflicient device of this nature so. arranged that it may be applied to a wagon box in place of the usual end gate and affording means whereby one man may conveniently operate the same.
My invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully" described, shown in the accompanying. drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanving drawings. in which:
Figure 1 is'a rear elevation of my invention. and Fig. 2 is atop plan view.
Reference now being had to the. details of the drawings by letter, A designates a board 'or member. made preferably of the size of the end gate of a wagon, and which is adapted to take the place of the usual end gate when adjusted for use. Said board A is provided with a circular-outlined opening B therein, and C designates a circular-outlined d sk which is journaled in said opening and has fixed to oneend therewhich is fastened to the top of the board.
short end of the lever and its other end is fastened to a hook K which is fastened to ;a shearing blade D which coiiperates- .wfi-th a horizontally dlsposedshearing blade the base of the board. A rod N is fastened at one endto the long arm of the lever and.
its other end is adapted to be bent at an .angle to form a convenient means whereby the foot of an operator may rest thereon .when it is desired to tilt the lever for the purpose of causing the blades to shear.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood and is as follows :The spring will normally hold the plate D in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and, when it is desired to top the corn, the
latter is laid over the stationary blade E and the operator, by pressing down upon the rod N, may cause the blade D to shear against the blade E, thus cutting off the heads which would naturally drop into the wagon box to which the board is applied. After pressure of the foot is relieved from the rod N. the parts will assume their formal positions.
By the provision-of adevice embodying the features of my invention, a simple and eiiicient mechanism is afforded whereby the device may be operated by one man who may conveniently handle the corn and operate the device with his foot.
What I claim to be new is: A device for topping Kafir corn. etc comprising, in combination with a supporting member provided with a circular-out lined opening therein.acirculardiskmounted to rotate within said opening and one end of the same project ng beyond the inner face of said member and its outer face flush with the opposite face of the member. a lever fastened to the outer face of the disk and serving to hold the disk from movement in one direction, a shearing plate secured to the upper edge of the member and projecting bevond the inner face of the latter, and a" shearing blade fastened to the inner face of the disk and adapted to shear aga nst the inwardly projecting edge of I said plate.
' In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT NICHOLSON. Witnesses:
