Be it known that I, EDWARD lA. ARBANA- SIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Truckee, in the county of Nevada and State of California, have invented. new and useful Improvements lin Can-Openers, vof,

which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved implement wherein a number of tools are combined in one and which particularly provides a can opener and a cutting element.

The present invention is an improvement on the can opener for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,164,77 6 were granted to me December 21, 1915.

One object of the present invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the can opening blade.

Another' object is to effect improvements in the construction of the bottle opening flange and its relation to the blade of the can opener.

Another object is to elect improvements in the construction of the fruit peeler.

Another object is to provide the branches with stop knobs which prevent the casual opening of the screw driver and cork screw when the implement is used as a hammer.

The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an implement constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the screw driver and cork screw extended. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partly in section, and with the screw driver and cork screw in closed position. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on av plane intersecting the fruit peeler plate and the extended arm of one of the branches.

My improved can opening implement comprises a single length of material bent upon itself to provide a loop or handle 1 and parallel branches 2, 3, the branch 3 being longer than the branch 2, to forni an extended arm 4 and the branch 2 having its outer end out-turned and arranged at right angles thereto to provide a flange 5 which constitutes a bottle cap remover. This fiange has an opening 6 therein of suitable size and shape, one edge of which opening is adapted to engage beneath the cap to remove the same from the bottle in the usual well known manner. The. branches 2, 3, are closely associated Aand are spaced a slight distance by means of acutting element 10 which is interposed between them and is riveted thereto. The cutting element comprises a strip 11 of material having an out-turned portion 12 which bears directly against the outer side of the flange 5 and also having a can opening blade 13 which is arranged at right angles to and extends outwardly from said flange 5 and is parallel with and spacedfrom the extended arm4 of the branch 3. The cutting edge 14 of the blade 13 is curved as shown. The flange 5 and the out-turned portion 12 of the cutter are provided with a notch 15 which is in rear of the cutting edge of the blade and is adapted to receive the edge of the can on which the implement is used. The flange 5 coacts with the blade 13 when the device is used as a can opener by serving to bear on the can and form a fulcrum for the device.

A screw driver 16 and a cork screw 17 are respectively pivoted as at 18,119 between the branches 2, 3, and are adapted to be swung outwardly at right angles to the handle, formed by the implement, for use, or to be folded into the loop of the handle when not in use. loop of the handle is secured a block 20 which forms a hammer. To hold the screw driver and the knob in closed position and prevent them from swinging outwardly when the implement is in use as a hammer, I provide the branches 2, 3, with inwardly projecting knobs 21, 22, which are struck up therefrom as shown and which engage on the outer sides of the screw driver and cork screw respectively, when said screw driver and cork screw are in closed position.

The extended arm 4 of the branch 3 is provided with a longitudinal slot 23 which is positioned near one edge thereof. I also provide a cutting plate 24 which is especially adapted for use as a potato or fruit peeler. This plate is arranged on the upper side of the branch arm 4, has its side edges inturned to'form securing flanges 25, which engage over the edges of said arm and hold said plate in place and said plate is also In the outer end of thek formed with an out-turned straight edge cutting blade 26 which overhangs the slot 23, a clearance opening 27 being also formed in said/y plate under said cutting blade and which opening registers with said slot. This construction of the cutting or peelingplate enables the same to be readily attached to or removed from the extended arm of the branch 3, as will be understood.

Having described the invention, what is claimed is:

A device of the character described comprising a pair of branches, one having an out-turned flange and a cutting element comprising a strip secured between said branches and having an out-turned portion bearing against said flange and a cutting blade extending outwardly from said outturned portion, arranged at right angles to said flange.
