To all 207mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GoDnU, a-citizen of the United States, residing at \Vinchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Inserting Fastenings, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for inserting previously formed fastenings, such,
for example, as headed nails or tacks, and
particularly to fastening feeding mechanisms for use in such machines.
Fastening inserting machines which are used to insert headed fastenings are usually provided with raceways down which the fastenings are conducted from the'hopper or other source of supply into position to be operated upon by the separator or other fastening delivering mechanism. These raceways are usually long enough to hold a considerable number of fastenings, especially when the machine is to be operated at high speed, since it is important that there be no interruption in the delivery of fastenings to the inserting mechanism suchas might occur if the fastenings should become temporarily clogged at the upper end of a short raceway. When it is desired to change from one length of fastening to another in a machine provided with a comparatively long raceway, diiliculty is sometimes experienced in removing the fastenings quickly from the raceway. This operation usually takes considerable time and is frequently most quickly accomplished by removing the raceway from the machine and shaking the nails or other fastenings out of one end of it.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved raceway from which the fastenings may be quickly removed when it is desired to change from one length of fastening to another, or when it is desired to remove the fastenings for any other purpose. In its illustrated embodiment this object of the invention is attained by making provision, preferably at a point between the ends of the raceway, for quickly and easily enlarging the fastening guiding groove in slot is formed continuous.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the inventi0n,Figure l is a perspective view of a raceway having provision, in accordance with the invention, for quickly removing the fastenings therefrom, the raceway being shown as broken away at the upper end; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the raceway illustrating in detail the mode of operation of the improvements which constitute the invention.
The raceway 2 down which the fastenings slide from a fastening container 3 is provided with a groove 4, this groove being narrow at the top so that the head of the nail or tack may rest upon the sides 6 and 8 of the groove while the shank depends in the groove. Below the narrow portion the groove is enlarged at 10, this enlarged portion of the groove being wide enough to permit the nails to fall through it in the event that they come into it. The raceway is preferably composed of two separate plates fastened together by bolts 12.
In order that the nails may fall clear of the fastening inserting machine and also in order that it may not interfere with the proper construction of the lower end of the raceway, the provision for removing the nails is made just above the lower end of the raceway, as shown in Fig. 1. In the illustrated construction the s de 8 of the groove in the raceway is provided near the lower end of the raceway with a slot 14 into which fits the upper end of a lever 16 pivoted at 18 between cars 20 formed upon the side 8, the side 8 being the side nearer the operator when the raceway is located in the machine. The upper end of the lever 16 is so shaped that when it is in position in the slot 14 it makes the side of the raceway in which the T o insure its proper location in the slot the lever is so shaped that when it has been turned about its pivot 18 until the face or shoulder 22 strikes the bottom of the slot 14: the continuity of the raceway will be complete.
The lever 1.6 is preferably held normally in the position in which it completes the raceway and any suitable means may be provided for this purpose, such, for exthe lever bearing against the side. of the raceway. When 1t. is desired to remove the nailsfrom the raceway, the operator turnsthe set screw 24 to release the lever 16 and" then moves the lever into the:v dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, thus enlarging the groove-4 so that the heads of the nails will drop through into the groove 10. The nails at the lower end of the raceway may be removed by sliding them back until they come over the enlargement in the groove l or they may be removed one'at a time by op,- erating the machine. v
The foregoing arrangement for emptying the raceway may conveniently bedesignated a's a"trap.' v
The raceway herein shown and" described may obviously be used with a number of different types' of fastening inserting machines. An example; of a machine with which it is especiallyuseful' is the fastening inserting machine of my co-pending application, Ser. a fastening container, and an inclined raceway having a fastening guiding groove dimensioned to support the head of the fastening upon its sides while the shank depends in said groove, said raceway being arranged to conduct the fasteningsfrom said container to the point at which the fastening inserting operation takes place and having means at a point between said container and its delivery end for enlarging said groove to such dimensions that it will not support and guide the fastenings whereby the fastenings above said point will gravitate outof the raceway.

In an. machine of theclass described, a. fastening container, an inclined raceway arranged to conduct the fastenings from said container to. th'e'point at which. they are to be operated upon, said raceway having a fastening guiding groove which is provided with a; wall having a movable section at a point near the delivery end of said raceway, and means for positioning and normally maintaining said section. so that it co- Operates with the opposite. wall to sustain and guide the fastenings, said means being constructed to permit said section to be' moved away from the other wall whereby the fastenings may be removed from the raceway through the bottom thereof without exposing the delivery end of said raceway.

In a machine of the class described, a fastening container and an inclined" raceway arranged to conduct the fastenings from said container to the point at which they are to be operated upon, said raceway having a fastening guiding groove smaller at the top than at the bottom and having means at a point between said container and the delivery end of said raceway for enlarging said groove at the top to'permit the fastenings'to be removed from the bottom when it is desired, to empty said raceway without operating upon the fastenings.
