UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEVICE FOR SAVING AND ASSORTING TACKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed May 3, 1906. Serial No. 315,075-
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, GARABED H. ELMA- SIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Saving and Assorting Tacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for receiving and assorting tacks or the like, and is intended for use as an attachment for lasting machines in which there are two tack feeding mechanisms using tacks of different lengths and by pushing upon a finger piece one raceway is brought into position and the other raceway is moved out of position. During this change a few tacks escape from the raceway that is moved out of position and fall on the floor and are lost causing a large percentage of waste of tacks.
The object of this invention is to catch these tacks as they escape from the raceways and sort them, that is, to guide the long tacks into one receptacle and the short tacks into another receptacle.
The invention consists in a hopper to receive the tacks as they fall from the raceways, two receptacles located beneath said hopper and communicating therewith, a movable deflector located in said hopper above said receptacles and adapted to be moved to guide long tacks toward one of said receptacles and short tacks toward the other of said receptacles, together with suitable mechanism for moving said deflector, said mechanism operated at the, same time and by the same hand that moves the finger piece to bring one raceway or the other to position.
As the operating lever of the device of my invention is not necessarily connected to the finger piece hereinbefore referred to, but is merely located adjacent thereto, I have not illustrated the finger piece or the raceways connected therewith in the accompanying drawings.
The device of my invention is applicable also to machines having raceways for feeding pegs, rivets, screws, and the like of two different lengths.
My invention further consists in' the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the accompanying specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device for receiving and assorting tacks, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line 22 of Fig. 1, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail plan View of a perforated plate for preventing foreign substances from going beyond the hopper. Fig. 4 is a detail plan of the guide-plate. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevationtaken on line 6-6 of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 3.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Ih the drawings, 10 is a hopper which is fast to a frame 11. A guide-plate 12 located beneath said hopper and fast thereto is pro vided with two pyramidal recesses 13 and 14 and apertures 15 and 16 leading from the apeXes of said pyramidal recesses, respectively. A deflector 17 is pivoted at 18 to the guide-plate 12 and has an arm 19 preferably formed integral therewith, said arm extending through an aperture 20 in said guideplate. A link 21 connects the arm 19 of the deflector 17 to an operating lever 22 pivoted at 23 to a bracket 24, said bracket being mounted on the frame 11. The lever 22 eX- tends through a slot 25 formed in the hopper 10. As the operating lever 22 is rocked upon its pivot 23, the deflector 17 is moved from the position shown in full lines, Fig. 2, to the position shown in dotted lines in said figure. A plate 26 located in the hopper 10 above the deflector 17 is provided with a plurality of pyramidal depressions 27 and with a plurality of perforations 28 leading from the apeXes of said pyramidal depressions. The plate 26 allows tacks falling thereon to pass therethrough, but prevents large foreign substances, such for instance as pieces of leather, from falling against-the deflector 17 and interfering with its operation. Two receptacles 29 and 30 are located beneath the hopper 10 and communicate therewith through the apertures 15 and 16, respectively. The receptacles 29 and 30 are preferably made in the form of drawers slidably arranged on the under side of the guide-plate l2 and may be easily removed from said guideplate.
The operation of my improved device for receiving and assorting tacks is as follows: The device of my invention may be placed on a machine in which there are two tack feed ing mechanisms using tacks of diflerent lengths. The upper end of the operating lever 22 is preferably located adjacent to the finger piece that brings one raceway or 'the other into position, said finger piece and raceways not shown. As one of the raceways is moved out of position, the operating lever 22 may be moved at the same time and by the same hand that moves the finger piece connected to said raceway, thereby moving the deflector to a position indicated in full lines, Fig. 2. Any tacks which may fall from the raceway thus moved out of position fall into the hopper through the plate 26 and if they fall against the deflector 17 are guided toward the depression 13 by said deflector, and on reaching said depression are guided by the sloping sides of said depression to the aperture 15 through which they fall into the receptacle 29. When the finger piece hereinbefore referred to is moved to its other position, the operating lever 22 is moved at the same time until the deflector 17 is moved to a position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, whereupon any tacks that may fall from the other raceway as it is moved out of position will fall into the hopper 10 through the plate 26 and are guided by the deflector plate toward the recess 14 and are guided by the sloping sides of said recess toward the aperture 16 through which they fall into the receptacle 30.
It will be evident that the device of my in vention is applicable also to machines having two raceways for feeding tacks, screws, and the like of two different lengths, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. In a device of the character described, a hopper, a guide-plate located beneath said hopper, said guide-plate provided with two pyramidal recesses and two apertures leading from the apexes of said recesses, a receptacle located beneath each of said apertures, respectively, a deflector pivoted to said guide-plate with its axis located substantially midway between two said apertures, a receptacle located beneath each of said apertures, respectively, and mechanism for rocking said deflector upon its pivot.
2. In a device of the character described, a hopper, a guide-plate located beneath said hopper, said guide-plate provided with two apertures extending therethrough, a receptacle located beneath each of said apertures, respectively, a deflector pivoted to said guideplate and having an arm extending therethrough, a lever, and a link connecting said lever and arm.
3. In a device of the character described, a hopper, two receptacles located beneath said hopper and communicating therewith, a pivoted deflector adapted to guide tacks or the like toward one or the other of said receptacles, mechanism for rocking said deflector upon its pivot, and a perforated plate located in said hopper above said deflector.
4. In a device of the character described, a hopper, two receptacles located beneath said hopper and communicating therewith, a pivoted deflector adapted to guide tacks or the like toward one or the other of said recepta- 'cles, mechanism for rocking said deflector upon its pivot, and a plate located in said hopper above said deflector, said plate provided with a plurality of pyramidal depressions and a plurality of perforations leading from said depressions.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
