To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O'r'ro A. ScHnonDnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in. Smoke-Consumers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is primarily designed to provide an apparatus for utilizing smoke and products of combustion whereby the same may be rendered available for use as fuel in the generation of heat for any purpose in the industrial arts.
The invention consists of a plurality of tanks connected in series and adapted to receive water, means for causing the smoke and products of combustion to pass through the series of tanks, whereby all objectional particles are eliminated, connecting means between the series of tanks, and means for drawing the smoke and products of combustion from the furnace, stack or other source and compelling the same to pass through the tanks in which such smoke and products of combustion are washed and purified.
The invention also consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an apparatus of the nature herein before stated for carrying out the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view partly in section of the means for drawing the smoke and products of combustion from the source of generation and causing the same to pass through the purifying or washing tanks. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the connected series of tanks.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description. and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
The reference numerals 1, 2 and 3 represent a plurality of tanks preferably for a horizontal arrangement. These tanks contain water through which the smoke and products of combustion pass to have the impurities such as cinders eliminated therefrom. near their lower ends so that water admitted into one tank will pass to the remaining tanks and maintain a uniform level in all the tanks. A short pipe 5 connects the lower portion of tank 1 with the lower portion of tank 2 and a like connection 5 unites the tanks 2 and 3. ater is supplied to the tank 1 by means of a pipe 6 which is provided in its length with a suitable valve. Surplus water may pass off from the like tank 3 of the series by meansof a pipe 7 which is likewise provided with a controlling valve. A lJ-shaped pipe 8 connects the tank 1 with the tank 2 and its legs or vertical members pass through the tops of the tanks and extend into the latter to within a short distance of their bottoms. A like U-shaped pipe 8 connects the tank 2 with the tank 3. The legs or vertical members of the U-shaped connections are provided in their length with a plurality of openings 9 which permit a free ingress and egress of the smoke and products of combustion. A pipe 10 leads the smoke and products of combustion from the source of supply or point of generation to the first tank 1 of the series. The pipe 10 has a portion 10 which extends into the tank 2 and is provided in its length with a plurality of openings for the escape of the smoke and gases. A tank 11 is located above the connected series of purifying or washing tanks and is connected with the last tank 3 of such series by means of a pipe 12 which is provided at its upper end with a downwardly closing valve 13 which prevents the return of the gas to the purifying tanks. A pipe 14% connects with the upper portion of the tank 11 and conveys the gas from such tank to the required point of use which may be the combustion chamber of the furnace. The pipe 14: is provided in its length with a valve to control the passage of the gas therethrough. A waste pipe 15 is connected by branch pipes 16 with the several purifying tanks, each of the branch pipes having a valve for cutting off communication between the tanks and the gas pipe 15. hen it is required to draw off the settlings from anyone of the purifying tanks the valve in the length of the branch pipe 16 leading from such tank is opened with the result that the accumula tions or waste products pass off through the branch and main waste pipes to the predetermined point of discharge.

The pipe 10 is provided in its length with an expansion chamber 17 and with a check valve 18 to prevent the back flow of the gas. A. fan blower 19 is also located in the length of the pipe 10 and serves to draw the smoke and product of combustion from the source of supply or point of generation and cause the same to pass through the connected series of purifying tanks. It is to be understood that the pipe 10 may connect with a smoke stack, smoke box, combustion chamher or other place designed to receive the smoke and gases emitted as a result of the partial combustion of fuel. The fan blower 19 may be operated in any manner. As shown a drive belt 20 connects a pulley attached to the shaft of the fan or blower with the pulley attached. to a shaft 21 which is driven from a source of power by means of a belt 22.
A pump connects with the pipe 10 and comprises a cylinder 23 and a piston 24 arranged to operate in said cylinder. A check valve is located in the length of the pipe 10 between the point of connection of the pump with such pipe and the tank 1. Upon the out stroke of the piston 24: in the cylinder the smoke and gases contained in the cylinder 23 are forced therefrom into the tank 1. Upon the back stroke of the piston 2 the check valve 25 closes and the check valve 18 opens thereby permitting the smoke and gases to be drawn into the cylinder 23 preliminary to being forced from such cylinder on the next out stroke of the piston 24. The piston rod 26 is connected with a cross head 27 which operates in a guide 28 and is connected with one end of a pitman 29 the other end of such pitman being connected with the wrist pin of a fly Wheel or a pulley 3O fastened to a shaft 31 which is driven from the shaft 21 by means of a belt 32 passing around the pulleys fixed to the respective shafts 21 and 81.
In the operation of the invention the smoke and gases are drawn from the source of supply by means of the fan blower 19 and are further subjected to positive movement by means of the pump with the result that they will pass through the water contained in the tank. The partly purified smoke and gases pass from the tank 1 through the connection 8 into the tank 2 and from the latter into the tank 3 through the connection 8 The unconsumed particles, ashes and the like, contained in the smoke and gases are removed therefrom by means of the water contained in the several tanks, the gas thus purified passes from the last purifying tank of the series through the pipe 12 into the gas tank 11 and from such tank through the pipe 14 to the required point of use. The impure water is drawn off from the series of purifying tanks through the pipe '7 by opening the valve therein. When it is preferred to remove the settlings or accumulations from anyone of the purifying tanks the valve in the branch pipe 16 connecting such tank with the waste pipe 15 is opened with the result that the impurities accumulating in the lower portion of the tank pass olf.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method. of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.

In apparatus of the character specified, the combination of a plurality of purifying tanks, each adapted to receive a quantity of liquid, U-shaped pipes forming connecting means between the purifying tanks and having their legs dipping into the liquid contained therein and provided with a plurality of openings at different levels, a gas tank connected with the last purifying tank, connecting means between the lower portions of the purifying tanks, a waste pipe having valved connection with the bottom portion of each of the purifying tanks, a supply pipe dipping into the liquid con tained in the first purifying tank and having such end portion provided with a plurality of openings at dilferent levels, anexpansion chamber in the length of the supply pipe, a blower for constantly supplying smoke and products of combustion to the expansion chamber, a pump for drawing charges intermittently from the expansion chamber and forcing the same into the first purifying tank, a check valve in the supply pipe between the pump and expansion chamber and a second check valve in the supply pipe between the first purifying tank and pump.
