HORSE-DRENOHING BIT.
Specification of Letters Patentk Patented Dec. 15, 1914;.
Application filed April 20, 1914. ySerial No. 833,257.
Drenchinff Bits; and I do declare the follow b full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make `and use thefsame.`
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ydrenching bits and the primary object of the invention is to provide ya bit which may be quickly and readily applied to the head of an animal to enable medicines and the throat of an animal.
A further object ofthe invention resides in providing a device which will enable a predetermined amount of the medicine to be administered.
Still another object of the invention, resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very etlicient and useful in operation.
IVith these and other vobjects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed' out in the specification andclaim. 4
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application'z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my dev1ce;`Fig. 2 1s a seoy tion therethrough; Fig. 3 isa similar view taken on a plane at right` angles to that ofy Fig. 2. l In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding partsy throughout the several views and in which- 1 indicatesa bit bar to the ends of which are applied strips or cheekpieces 2 and 3, said cheek pieces being secured in any preferred manner. The cheek piece 3 dependsl on one side of the bit bar 1 ,tov a greater' extent than the cheek piece 2 and engaged with the upper end of the cheekv piece 2 is one end of a head stall or strap 4, the opposite end of said head stall or strap being adapted for engagement with the upper end ofthe cheek piece 3. This head strap or stall may be adjustable if desiredwhereby to be applied on any sized head.
the like to be forced down The bar V1 is tubular and extends completely througl.1 the ycheek piece 3 and terminates in a'tubular member or cylinder 6 which is designedto receive a liquid, such as medicine and the like. It might here also be stated that the cheek piece 2 has a cavity 2a therein for receiving one end of the tubular bit bar 1. In receiving this end .of the bit bar in the cavity 2a, said cheek piecev forms a closure for the last mentioned end of said bar andthe bit bar and cheek to the other n at this piece 2 are secured one connection by soldering, Welding or l any lother similar vmeans of securing the members.v The. opposite end of the bit bar 1,
however, as stated above extends completely through thel cheekfpiece 3, said cheek piece being provided with an opening 3e for `such purpose and injorder yto secure the cheek piece 3 in a rigid position withrespect to the bit bar said cheek piece is soldered, welded, or otherwise similarly secured to the cylinder 6 which extends longitudinally thereof. This structure may be clearly seen in the showing illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This cylinder 6 which is indicated onv the one side of the piece 3 has an inlet opening '7 therein and a discharge opening 5 is provided in the tubular bit bar 1. This discharge opening 5 in the bit bar v 1 admits of the medicine or ythe liquid being discharged down the throat. Slidably mounted from the lower end of the cylinder or tube 6y is a piston or plunger 8 the shank portion of which is provided with a scale indicated at 9 and the outer end of said shank is provided with a finger piece or knob 10 whereby to operate said plunger or piston in the cylinder 6. Applied on the shank of the piston 8 is a sleeve 11 in which isy operatively mounted an adjusting screw 12 whereby to secure the sleeve in any adjusted position on the shank. In this manner predetermined amounts of the liquid inthe cylinder or tube 6 may be forced into the tubular bit bar 1 to be in turn forced down the throat of the animal. Also secured to the lower end of the cheek piece or strip 2 is one end of a chin strap 13 said chin strap being adapted for engagement also with the cheek piece 3 whereby to secure the device in place on the head of the animal.
Inoperation, the device is applied to the head of the animal in the usual mannerv and the sleeve 11 is then adjusted on the shank of the piston 8 to permit said piston or plunger to be forced inwardly the The lplunger 8 dren'chinglbit which is simple and durable 1n construction, inexpensive. to manufacture yand lone Which vwill be very efficient and useful in operation. y o
p While l have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform lthe functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in. form, proportion and in 'the minor details of construction may be resorted towithout departingufrom the spirit or vsa, orilicing'any of the principles of the invention.. Y
y Having thus part'cularly described mylinvention, What Ik claim is i Y 4 In a drenching bit, a pair of cheek pieces,
one of which is of greater length than the other and providedwith an opening therein `C'oi'ies this patent he obtained tor adjacent its upper end, the other cheek piece i being provided on itsinner face with a cavity alining With the opening in the rst mentioned cheek piece,y a tubular bit bar havingv -an outlet opening about central thereof and having its one end received and "secured in the cavity of the last mentioned cheek piece,
f said checlr piecehaving a rigid connection with the bit bar and forming a closure there-` for, the opposite end. of said bit bar extending through the openingin the'lirst nnen@ tioned cheek piece, a @tubular receptacle formed integral with the extending end of s said bit bar to form an angular continuation thereof, said tubular receptacle being dis'- posed longitudinally of aiidgsecured to A the outer face of theirst mentionedcheek piece', means `whereby a liquidmay be introduced to said receptacle and means for forcing a v predetermined yamount of liquid Vwfronfi-tl'ie receptacle through the bit bar. l 'y ln testimonywhereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing vitness'es'. .l GILBERT`G-VWHITE. p `Witnesses: l f
