UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABEL BREAR, OF SAUGATUOK, OONNEOTIGUT.
IM PROVEMENT IN SMKING-.TUBE&
Specification formihgpart of Letters Patent N0. 136,695, dated March 11, 18 73.
T0 all whom zt mag concewz:
Be it known that I, ABEL BREAR, of Saugentuck, in the county of Fairfield and Staate of Conneoticuo, have invented an Improved Smoking- Tube, of whioh the following is a speoifica-tion:
[bis invention relates 1:0 tubes for si'noking out tobaceo, whereby it is designed to simu- 1ate the appearanoe of a eigar. These as heretofore made have been defecive, mainly owing 130 the loosening of the joint between the tube and itsmouth-pieoe after use for a short time, and also on acconnt of the liab ility of the partioles of tobaceo to be drawn into the mouth-piece so as to stop it up. The object 0f this invention is to obviate these defects; und. t0 tl1is end it consists in the corn1oination, with the tnbe 811d. its mouh-pieoe, of an elastio connecting piece a-nd a taper p rforatedstem inserted thereinto so as to projeet within the tnbe, whereby the tobaoco is absolutely prevented fron1 entering the month-pieee ab all, and whenever the joint beconnes loose the taper stem may be pushed. further' into the aforesaid oonnecting-piece to expand ib and tighten the joint.
In the. aooompanying dmwin g, Figure 1 is a side view of the smokingtube, and Fig.2 is a longitudinal seetion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding arts in both fignres.
A is a tnbe of thin metal, Whioh is open a1;
both ends, bnt at the outer its is slightly nontracted, o1, in ot-her words, has its edge turned inward, as shown in Fig. 2. A tobaeco-colored wrapper is wound around the tube to give it the sembiance of a oigar. There is within this tube a follower, B, attaohed to a spiral spring, O, also oontained in the tobe. A month-piece, D, fitted to the inner end 0f the tube, for1ns a This mouth-pieee is made to resennble a oigar-holder, and is furnished a-t the forward end with a.
eonneoting-pieee, G, of oork, India rubber, or
into this conneoting-piece from theouter end a perforated hollow stem, S, which projeets into the tobe A and. constituteS a guide for the spring G, and also prevents any tobaceo whioh may be drawn past the plunger frorn being suoked into the mout-h-piece, the smoke whioh is drawn through it passing in through the perforations. By this means the mouthpiece is kept fron1 clogging up and the smoking of the device is faoilitated. This ste1n S is taper, and may be pushed fort-her into the eonneeting-pieoe to expand its wheneverthe joint abont; the tube becomes 1oose.
'lo fill oho tube, oho mouth-piece is removed and a charge of tobaoco is introduced from the inner end. of the tube, while the finger is held on the outer end. 'lhe follower and spring are now inserted and tl1e mouth-piece is applied.
'lhe tobaceo is lighted, a-nd as fast es it is consumed the spring, by its resiiienee, forces the eharge forwaprd so ehe burning tobaceo will always be at the end of the tube and the semblanoe of a oigar Will be maintained all the while.
Gut; 01 granulated tobaeco of any kind rnay be used in this tube, and it will not be foreed. 0nt, owing to the eontraction of the end of the tube, whioh, upon any tendeney to n1ove forward, compresses or crowds its parbioles together, and so prevents their ejection; and,
moreover, 2my partieies of tobaooo whieh aredrawn past the plunger Will be prev(anted from entering the month-piece and stopping it np by reason of the smailness of Ehe perforations in the stem. The smoke, however, is allowed to pass freely through the mouthpieee withou t any obstructiom Olm'm.
The eombination, with the tube A and its mouth-pieee D, of the eiastio taper conneetingpieee G and perforated stem S, substantially as and for the purpose sei: forth. A. BREAR.
