Specification of Letters Patent.
G. Bonn, or anemia, TENNESSEE.
Application filed April 2, 1914. Seria1 No. 82B,094;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ZENUS L. HURD,;
L. D. HURD, and Owns the United States, thecounty of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Ladder-Feet, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in ladders and has relation more particularly to an attachment therefor; andthe object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character wherein is af G. HURD, citizens of forded an effective means whereby such leg is prevented from slipping and from inarring the surface on which it may rest. v
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and 'arrangement of the several parts of our improved ladder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I
' The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, whereinigure 1 is a view in rear elevation of an attachment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectlonal vlew taken substantlallyon the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 1s a sectional view taken on a line substantially at right angles to the section disclosed in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 44 of Fig. 1 ,and Fig; 5 is a view of a. devicelof a somewhat different design but constructed substantially as disclosed in the preceding.
views.
As disclosed in the accompanyingdrawings, 1 denotes a frame of requisite construction having projecting upwardly therefrom and integrally produced therewith, the bars or arms 2 of predetermined length and integrally produced with the upper extremities of such arms or bars is a second frame'3, such frames 1 and 3 being of a configuration substantially similar to the form of'the leg in cross section to which the device is adapted to be applied, andlthe upper frame 3 is adapted to snugly accommodate such leg.
residing at Nashville, in
I outer extremity rested upon a polished The side bars 4 of the frame 3 are disposed on downward curves while one of the end bars 5 of the frame 8 is projected upwardly, as indicated at 6, and such end bar is provided withathreadedopening 7 through which is adapted to be adjusted the elongated pointed member 8 provided at its with'the milled head 9. It is to be observed that the member 8 is of such a length as to cause the pointed extremity 10 thereof to sopenetrate or impinge the adjacent face of a leg as to effectually maintain the device or attachment against displacement.
The lower frame 1 is provided with a filler block 11 preferably formed of canvas webbing and with which the lower end or face of the leg is adapted to contact and suitably secured to the under face of such filler block 11 is a layer 12 of soft rubber having its outer face serrated or corrugated, as indicated at 1 1. This layer 12 is disposed below and exteriorly of the lower frame 1 and serves asan effective means to prevent slipping or skidding of the leg and also serves to prevent marring of the surface on which such leg may be supported, especially when the ladder, of which the leg forms a part, is
surface. In order to maintain the filler block 11 against displacement, we herein show the same as securely maintained inoperative position through the medium of the rivets 15 disposed transversely of the frame 1. From the foregoing thought-to be obvious that a ladder attachment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason" of the convenience and facility with which it maybe assembled and by reason-of the effectiveness with which it formsits functions, and it will alsobe obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice.
We claim: I I In a ladder foot, the combination of a metallic holder having its upper and lower per- Patented Dec. 1, 1914. a
