Description
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
AZerZ 30/012 Mod/mu;
A. SOHM.
ALBERT SOHM, OF TOMPKINSVILLE, NEW YORK.
PACKAGE-TIER.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24;, 1914.
Application filed June 3, 1914., Serial No. 842,715.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT SoHM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tompkinsville, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Tiers, of which the following is aspecification.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective package tier for use in readily securing wrappings to the packages or in securing together bundles of letters or other mail matter.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a package tier which consists of substantially two parts, namely, a tying member or cord and a means for securing the cord after the same has been wrapped around the package.
The invention is particularly adapted for use in securing mail matter, and to this end the package tier is arranged and constructed so that it can be quickly applied and as readily removed from the mail matter or package.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package tier, showing the same in position on a package; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the securing member for the cord.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a package 10 around which is adapted to be wrapped a suitable cord 11 held by a suitable securing member 12. The securing member consists, more particularly, of a single piece of wire which is bent in a semi-circular form to provide a handle or holder 13, looped at one end to provide an attaching member 14 through which passes an end of the cord 11 as shown, the said piece of wire being then bent to form a straight portion 15 terminating in a loop 16, with one extremity of wire forming a spring-like locking member 17 having a portion extending substantially parallel to the straight portion 15, the other end of the wire being passed through a loop 16 and then bent backward to form a hook 18.
member is placed on the package and hel handle 13 and the cord is then looped longituclinally of the package and passed over the hook 18,after which the cord is passed transversely around the package and its free end is arranged between the straight portion 15 and locking member 17, a pull beingthen exerted on the free end of the cord to secure the same tightly around the package and to pull the same into the inner end of the locking member 17, after which the cord is given a hitch around the hook 18. It will thus be seen that the cord will be securely wrapped around the package to pre vent it from coming apart, and particularly in the case of mail matter such as envelops, the various cnvelops forming the package will be securely held together by the cord when wrapped around the envelope in connection with the securing member as mentioned.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device consists substantially of two parts, namely, the cord 11 and the securing member 12 formed of a single piece of spring-like wire, thus insuring cheapness of manufacture of the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a package tier, the combination with a cord, of a securing member consisting of a single piece of spring-like wire bent to form a semi-circular holder, with the said wire looped at one end of the holder and an end of the cord passed through the said loops, the said piece of wire being then bent to form a straight portion looped around the other end of the holder and terminating in a spring-like locking member lying in the plane of the straight portion, with another extremity of the wire bent through the last mentioned loop and bent backward thereon to form a hook, said cord being adapted to be passed around the package, looped over the hook and then again passed around the package and secured between the straight portion and the locking member, with an end of the cord hitched over the hook.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
